When the wind is limp and the temps are cold, I was thinking of getting a waverunner for tow-ins when it's gnarly at the Oregon coast. I figure there is a learning curve for the driver and I'll probably thrash the machine the first winter as I plan to ride huge waves. Read: fat old guy wants to be like Kai Lenny.
Any thoughts on type of waverunner to get sum on the Oregon coast?

G: A couple of questions about the pic you posted. . .
1) where is the tow-in surfer in the pic?
2) Is that Nelscott Reef pictured?
Lastly, to the dude who posted this thread originally, go for the new jetski. More peace of mind out there getting run down by those big waves and just being out on the Pacific. My 3 cents.

Gman, your posts are simply radical.
I had no idea about the UWH and it looks like something I would really like.
And that wave... oH Yeah!
Sasquatch, I'm with you on the new. I just don't want to go too plushy as I know I'm going to wash it up on the beach upside down.

thats Nelscott - 2018 last time i was out
come out tonight Underwater hockey night - mt hood community center aquatic center 7 pm - we have all the gear you need - bring a mask, snorkel and fins if you got em - we got you covered if not - maybe a shorty suit - little nippy tonight
tow surfing is a bit of a community thing - you want some company if things go sideways- we went with a new ski after taking a few lessons - reliable partner in crime is most important

tempted to take a snap of this and post it to Kook of the Day.
Hey Barney, just stick to kiting if you don't surf already. Don't put your (seemingly suicidal) self, partner, or paid rescuers at risk of saving you. Just cause you kite waves doesn't mean you can surf them.
sorry to be a troll, but I just couldn't let this one go.

Careful what you wish for...
Some might consider a self-proclaimed shreddr who lives >3 hrs from the beach calling out kooks the epitome of kookiness.

I'm at peace with my Barney-ness. I wore two white socks today that somehow didn't quite match.

Waverunner (naturally aspirated -Expect to get some air and that can be murder on a supercharger (Coast and/or Gorge)). Sure you can pic up a new one, but why? Used with low hours would seem a smart play. Rebuild the jet pump so you know it's fresh. Waverunners are like old tractors, they just go and go. You'll have to flush after every saltwater use, however.
You'll need a sled as well. I have an Extractor with their "Military Mount" (big bombproof stainless steel mounting system) that works well. If I was buying new, I'd seriously look at High Surf Accessories (and use shock cords).
Not a bad idea to build a board rack for the trailer (weird that no one produces one in the States (Aussie's have them, but not us, so built my own)). Might get a head-bonk now and then, but nice to be able to carry the sled, SUP, etc with the trailer.
You might be able to finagle some recovery training at the Coast/Williamette. I had a hook up, but no longer. Never got the chance to take advantage of it.
Have fun!
I made the cross bars long for bike mounts, but later trimmed them as I liked to catch them on my shop door.
