Where are some good locations to live for someone to access good kiting conditions (good launch and wind) in the "Gorge"? Hood River/White Salmon are obvious. The Dalles? Stevenson? Others? Thanks for your input. |

If good kite launches with other folks around to lend a hand if needed are your only criteria, they are:
Rooster Rock
Stevenson
Viento
The Event Site
The launch that shall not be mentioned near Lyle
Rufus
That's pretty much it without going to drift launching, self-landing etc |

Lyle, Husum and Dallesport are more affordable. acreage above Lyle is very affordable. White salmon and HR are off the charts expensive. Lyle and Dallesport are closer to Rufus. A house down the street in WS had 5 offers the first week and sold for 35K over the asking price. _________________ moondog |

Rowena has a few river-front houses with excellent access for wind and kite surf. Stevenson west of Bob's beach has a few river-front houses too. You should look into those options. |

I live in The Dalles and I like it. 20 minutes to Rufus or HR, whichever has the best wind and the least crowds. Also it makes the strike out to A town a bit easier in the shoulder season. _________________ See you on the water. |

The other considerations the no state income tax in Washington, a nice 8% raise _________________ moondog |

Thanks everyone for the helpful information.
Are the winds often pretty different between HR and Rufus? |

"if it's sunny, head west. If it's cloudy, head east" is generally the guide I follow. The winds are best nearer to the edge of the clouds. Often early in the season the Central Corridor is overcast and that's when you hit Rufus, Roosevelt, etc for sun and wind. Then as summer is in full swing these places can overheat and that's when sites around Hood River hit. And then in a serious heatwave it's time to run to the coast. _________________ CGKA Member

are you planning on moving here?
if so consider the off season as the river can get pretty cold so other hobbies might be in order. if you like to ski, you might rethink some of those places as it will be more challenging to get to the mountain. places like stevenson can have strong east winds all winter long, not to mention the rainiest spot. hood river gets the freezing fog alot. Great info.
Not planning on moving there. Just trying to figure out housing options for 4-5 “summer” months. May be able to buy something very small but concerned about leaving it empty for 7 months. Guess I could hire a kid to check on it periodically. Other option is to Airbnb those months but I can’t just rent a room cause the wife has to be happy. 😀😀😀 |

One more thing. For year-round joys.
Stand on any street corner in Lyle/WS/Hood River from May to October... and then blindfold stand on that same street corner in La Ventana October to April and you'll find they speak the same dialect. _________________ CGKA Member
