Has anyone tried kiting with ankle weights in order to increase their weight.

What I mean by this is - if the conditions are too windy for the kite that you have - would it help to put on ankle weights in order to create more drag?

I just thought it would be something to try when we get nuclear days - like easterlies at Rooster Rock.

Yeah, I'm sure it would help, although I haven't tried it myself. You can probably get more weight on your body with a belt or vest with weights if you can put that on next to your harness. I'm sure you can ride anything you'd want to with a 9m and 100lbs of extra weights.

Back in the day some of the smaller pro racers would wear weight jackets so they could hold down bigs sails like the heavy weights.

You would want the amount of weight to be at least 10% body weight to notice and more likely 20%.

If I remember it was at least 20#s, if not more, I doubt you would want that much weight on your feet.

My advise is to buy more kites, rig right and respect the kite Shocked

Not respecting the kite always ends up bad. Crying or Very sad

my 2 cents

I'd be worried that the weights would drag me down to Davey Jones' Locker!

i woulnt put on anything i might sink in. if your riding the right equipment you shouldnt need any extra wieght although if its really smoking windy i think hot women riding on our backs would be the best solution

Talk about a Darwin mistake. Sounded like a good idea to me too, until I started thinking SINK. Make sure you wear a good lifejacket when you try it out.

I agree it's a bad idea - any mafia hitman can tell you that...

But, my kokatat kayak pfd provides 17 lbs 10 oz of floatation (in fresh water). I think the min. need is like 10 lbs to keep you a float depending on your body. So, if you figure the water displaced by the weights and your wetsuit will add to buoyancy... you may be able to get away w/ 10 lbs on the ocean.

I would experiment in shallow water & have quick releases on the weights. Oh, and strap the life jacket on damn tight!

The idea would probably work and be a lot safer landboarding / snowkiting as far as waterkiting, I'm w/ kiteboard117.

Dude rig the right sized kite or stay off the water if you are that wound.

That just may be the gayest thing I have heard.

i think people do this with small sailboat racing. however, they do *not* slap on metal weights. they use vests with water compartments (water doesn't sink in water..)

shay nailed it though.... the modern little sle's give you the same upper range as the windsurfers, and way safer then some added weight + big kite combo... either ride a little kite or chill out

I think you'd be better off getting more fit.

Although I have been up and down enough in weight to know I prefer being lighter (then I am today).

..and yeah sinking doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Smile

That is some funny shit. . . I concur, that is a pretty "gay" and "darwinesk" idea about the ankle weights. . .

The other thing that is "gay" (lame is more pc) are forum members with avatars that are a close-up mug shot of themselves. Come on, have some creativity or at least some kind of action shot, but a close-up pic of yourself? Ace and Gary, the Ambiguously Gay Duo from Saturday Night Live would definately want you on their team if you have one of those. Razz

OK - fair enough. I'll take that as a personal attack seeings how there is only one other guy that is gay and has a mug shot of themself on this thread.

Interesting that I have been called gay twice on this thread by two different dudes. Look just because I like to suck the c**k doesn't make me gay. But it does make me wonder where are your minds if that is what you are thinking about. Did it ever occur to you that there are ladies that frequent this forum? - ladies that kite or are interested in kiting. They see me ripping it up on my oversized kite and ankle weights and then they see my mug on this forum and then send me a PM and want to jump in the sack with me. Dude don't get jelous just because I have more game then you.
