Sweet! What's the plan for tomorrow before Super Bowl? Wink

And does the ocean really feel that much warmer? Went over to Newport a few weeks ago just to check out the water and it still felt pretty cold. Can't really compare to the ponds though.

Ha, nothing but pre-game-n'

got my bears on, so I had to get out today, but for the record, Tolovana is real nice on S-wind days.

It's supposedly warmer during the winter...
Speaking of Newport, anyone notice both NOAA Newport sensors broke down. Makes checking conditions kind of tough there!

Yea, JP and I played over there last winter, and the water's definately warmer than summer, but it still felt colder than normal the other week.

And I use my iKite for satellite and radar, then http://weather.hmsc.orst.edu/ for wind now...

Check with i kite and see if one of you locals can help get the sensor up and running. I have worked on a few over the years and got years of free service for doing so as well as having it up and running for beta. The water usually isn't any colder in the winter thats for sure .

chanson - a good way to add videos is to upload them using google video: video.google.com

then just link to them when they are up.

Moving to Salem in March. What is the closest beach to salem that you can kitesurf on? What kitesize should I bring and how cold is the water really? Will I use a 5mm wetsuit all year round?

thanks
mel

Newport would be your closest shot. 5 mil would work out just fine. I'm usually in a 4:3.

For Summer/Spring/Fall, bring your wee little kites. It nukes at the coast.

You can also kite at Lincoln City, but from what I remember (from a few years ago) the conditions aren't superb. Mostly shorebreak and what not...

Newport / Lincoln City (siletz) is the spot to go for the solid wind. 'Bout an hour and a half. If you get up really early go for the gorge or southern coast. I have a 5/4 weatsuit - which does a good job. Coast isn't very good in winter except the bays if you get the timing right. Coastal guys can probably weigh in on this better than I.

Salem-Wise,
I'd like to try the Willamette some day. It was really blowing down here the other day & I drove through independence... the river's big and flat there... I was getting some ideas. Grand Island is another possiblity.

Definately just my opinion, and there may be other closer spots from Salem, but if you're looking for flat water riding on the coast, Siletz is the spot! Haven't been out there since last summer, but it's a sweet place! Otherwise we play at South Beach/Jetty, Newport.

Low, incoming tide, 35-40 day!

Another possibility:
If you're down in the Lebanon / Sweet Home area you might give Green Peter or Foster reservoirs a swing. Anyone ever kited there? I've heard it's good windsurfing. Also about an hour away.

I was talking to one of my friends from Sweet Home about kiting over there, but he didn't know much. Said the water's cold most of the year, except for the summer, so that didn't sound too appealing.
