About a month ago on a downwinder to Ft. Stevens this same thing happened to me. He was about 8 to 10 feet and jumped about 30 feet away from me. Instantly I fell in and was sure that I was about to be lunch.
It happened about half way between lot c and the ship wreck near the floating bouy maybe a 100 yards from shore. Later that day a girl from North Carolina said she had seen something similar. Anyone else have a close encounter? |

Two of us went from sunset to shipwreck today. No sighting but my buddy was nervous swimming back in after snapping two lines. |

It's autumn, and us central OR coast denizens don't call the month that starts in a few days "Sharktober" for nuthin'.
Sounds like that was a harmless little salmon shark you saw up north. We hardly even notice those.

Likely a salmon shark.
I was a commercial salmon fisherman for a few years....and one year I saw 'a white' and reported it ---but I do believe now that it was likely a salmon shark. They follow the fall salmon runs that push into the mouth of the Columbia.
I saw a couple more in the following years and figure they also were salmon sharks because these sightings all seem to coincide with the beginning of the Coho salmon runs--combined with the fall chinook runs. And each time I spotted them it was near the shipwreck or north toward the river. _________________ SPACESTICK

an acquaintance I know was surfing last Friday at the south jetty in Florence. His board was bitten on the tail and his right leg of the wet suit has about 6 punctures in it from the teeth of the shark that bit him. So lucky that it did not puncture the skin and leave a trail of taste. Shark was estimated to be 15' long. did not sound like a salmon shark. They are there!!!! Boost over them!! _________________ Take a breath; inhale |

Wait, wait, wait...let me get this straight: you see a breaching white and that's where you fall in? Darwin has entered the building. The only thing that should fall in after that is the poop in your wetsuit. |
