I did some searching and ended up finding several articles criticizing those that have caused trouble at Rufus - losing kites into swimming area etc.

Is there a place on the forum to get an overall description of what best practice is (this spot, and all spots frankly)? Underwater hazards, pump up and launch areas, wind shadows, parking, theft issues, etc.

Would be great to have some frequent users' detailed write ups of such stickied.

BTW, Sunday forcast (5/8/16) is looking good, I'm planning to go out. I'm down for a buddy system, being that it will be my first time there, if you know you're going to be there.

Thanks,
Justin

The launches are subject to change via erosion and water level.
It would be a huge liability for NWKITE to post defacto launch instructions and have somebody get hurt.....

You're on the right track - use the search and post up when you have questions.

I was about to rain on your Rufus parade as the current has been way to swift for good conditions there. Typically if the Columbia flow is over 300,000 cfs it is a challenge to kite there and the famous swell from the Wall to Rufus does not form properly.

But I notice the current is down to ~260,000 today.

Have a great time at Rufus. Watch, observe, network, land and launch some other people's kites....be safe.

Gorge Windsurfing group has pretty good map of different spots - not all are kite-able and not all have information about kite launch spots but it's a good point of reference:

Wow, that's a quick response. Thanks!

I understand, it's too bad we have a litigation-frenzied society. Here is an example of what I have found to be very informative - and likely reduces the number of incidents that could end in a lawsuit.

Anyway, thanks for a water flow headsup, I would have never even considered that.

Can you describe where/how you would launch? Not a recommendation of course, just a description of what you do Smile

rufus launch.
if you can find the the small building with the 2 bathrooms - the launch is due north of the bathrooms.
at the waters edge there is a small cove on your right (east). the cove is 50 yards wide.
people pump up and launch on the ne point of the cove.
it can get hectic and crowded on a weekend.
it will be obvious when you get there.

Sunday is predicted to be a boomer day. You'll have plenty of options up and down the Gorge and there is always a good Rufus kite crowd to help you. Enjoy!
