Thanks. |

I was in spi for a week in early Nov couple years back. That's the low season and there are so many empty condos and hotels I would dang near just show up and look around for a place u like and make a deal with the super. Places are pretty cheap that time of year. We had a reservation at a condo but the place turned out to be a dump. We bagged that deal and walked across the street to the Aquarius and stayed there all week. Nice hot tub there. _________________ Haole |

Yes, La Ventana is a cool place to visit as it is a quaint little hamlet Mexican town on the Sea of Cortez. Awesome fresh seafood and many other things to do when the wind isn't blowing.
BUT all it really has are consistent winds and some wind swell/chop. There really are no waves. Want flat water and or waves and to stay in the US, go to SPI. Not much to do if the wind isn't blowing.
And yes, I know NC/outer banks also has flat water and waves, but that wasn't mentioned within this thread/post. |

Dec is not the best month in SPI. Apr/May and Oct/Nov are better. That said, you may get a "norther" which can be windy but kind of cold. The Laguna Madre bay is huge and shallow. Very flat water.
Lodging is plentiful in the the fall/winter/spring. Look on line, we usually rented a condo when we used to go there.

I have spent October and November chasing wind from Galveston to SPI the past three years and am heading down again next week to start year number four. I have always had a great time kiting in different places along the gulf coast and almost all of those session were on a 10m. Plenty of wind from the north and the south, the flat water in Corpus and SPI are great, the surf and down winders on the gulf side are a fun change and some of the local secret spots are once in a life time kite adventures for those who enjoy getting out from the normal setup and kite routine.
A few years ago my kite buddies here in Alaska suggested I check it out and I did - now it's on my annual pilgrimage.
Some of these spots are a ton of fun once you get to them.

There is red tide down there right now - but supposedly its gotten better in the last couple of days. I was in SPI during the red tide of 2009 - really nasty - coughing just walking on the beach, dead fish everywhere and I couldn't ride during the worst of it. |

i can't believe you threw that link up there, its logical but hilarious. we made that page a long time ago when I used to work at airpadre (who it belongs to)
spikiteboarding.com
airpadrekiteboarding.com
prokitelessons.com
facebook.com/groups/SouthPadreKiteboarders/
should all be a little more useful
red tide not really around at the moment, nice afternoon/sunset foil sessions out in the gulf today.
shout out when you get to SPI, see you at the flats or can get on the DW Surf Team

I was looking at flights recently and I was getting $600-$650 from PDX to BRO. Granted the dates were Fri to Sun but that's out of my budget. What is an average rate for October and November to BRO (South Padre) from Portland? |

I have a RT ticket from PDX to IAH for $470 on Alaska. Traveling week days though.
It's a drive to SPI from Houston - A $15.00 cab ride to an off site car rental agency saves me a couple hundred dollars on airport fees over the course of my stay.
I also kite in Corpus and other spots up to Galveston so I have more of need to get around. SPI is easier and not so much of a need for a car if that's the only place your going - between the shuttle, cabs and other kiters there are usually plenty of rides available. _________________ "I have often regretted my speech, never my silence" ~Xenocrates

I will tell you that airfare to Spi is definitely up this year. I go every May or April from Bend. I've paid $375(last year!) to $600 round trip. So far this year, the cheapest is $800 for the same flights. I'm waiting to book... |

We usually fly Southwest into Harlengen. HRL. Its actually closer than Brownsville.
Plus, Southwest is TOTALLY cool about kite gear. No charge, no questions.
Then, stop at the shrimp packing office behind the high school in Port Aurther and buy huge bag of fresh gulf, extra large broken shrimp for the deal of the century. Its like 10 pounds for $20. Pick up some beer and cocktail sauce at HEB and you can be sailing by 1:pm. _________________ Ozone Reo's. C&k Beach Boy Service, Windsurfing Waikiki, Hawaiian Windriders, NSRN. |
