So over the last decade of kiting Manzanita ive seen my share of kooky **it. But friday topped it.

In 6 meter conditions and a really cold ocean thats been brewing upwelled 50 degree water for over a week now this guy goes in BOARDSHORTS!!!!!!, t-shirt and a baseball cap!...on backwards of course. Granted his kite skills were impressive, hucking many big styled out airs and sticking all of em, his intelligence needs to be questioned.

Bro Bro - You go down in that water without a wetsuit for more than 20 minutes your muscles seize up and you drown. Period.

Firstly peoplehater you should really wind your neck in. I'll give you some facts of your nonsense-ickle post here.

I was wearing a 5-3 winter wetsuit with the legs chopped off, with board shorts over the top.

I know my limits and always side with the air of caution.

I've probably had more kite sessions than you've had hot dinners - why would you come on here to call someone out you know nothing about?

I can look after my self I suggest you do the same.

Thanks for the mention all the same.

Ahh, The ol' boardshorts over the cutoff 5/3 with the jersey look. Excuse my ignorance of the latest fashions and my lack of x-ray vision. I stand corrected.

Had you really been so fn moronic as to not wear a wetsuit in 50 degree water I would have been very justified in calling you or anyone out. Im not gonna turn a blind eye to stupidity. Especially in my backyard.

BTW- Bro bro, you very well might have more flat water chop fest sessions than I but doubt you even come close in any ocean surf bigger than your cut off wetsuit.

Be nice guys. We still have great wind and water to enjoy. Keep these energy on the positive side. I would expect this during the winter when most of is are penned up. Back to the water:-)!!

Fog hater.... You getting old?

We are not smart enough to know it all let Darwin sort them out.

I do agree that in the northern Oregon ocean, if your really out there in it , I would not recommend the short wetsuit option . I get cold after a bit in a full 4/3 out there so I wear more.
A 5/3 short suit may be fine close in with no 1/2+ hour swims , never tried that.

I am no Borgenstiener tho

Go get it..

Good intentions......

Both of these guys sound like cooks and should really consider windsurfing or better yet fishing.

Nailed that one right on the head;-)

Colin: Be nice. If you want to get all salty and vinegar on something, don't do it to one of the longtime kiting residents of Manzo. Foghater has been kiting for just as long as your B-Stein, probably longer. I'm quite sure he had an eye on you 5/3 cutoff guy in case something went wrong.

May I suggest you get a basket of fish-and-chips and season it to your hearts delight with salt and vinegar and share it with your recent 5/3 cutoff transplant from across "the pond" buddy.

Good winds to ya!

I do to !! which is why I originally posted this in the first place. I dont want to have to pull someones dead body out of the ocean. Though my attitude was more brash than needed, especially with the fact that I was wrong on the wetsuit, my intentions were good. Be safe.

I just can't keep up with fashion any more. First boardshorts over a wetsuit went out of style. Now they are back in because some Italian fashion guru decided it looked cool if you just cut the legs off of a wetsuit so it did not look like you had a suit on.

I guess I just give up. Can we just get "Retro" already and get bright neon colors on our wetsuits? Heck, codpieces could even be worked in.

How about a separate section on NW Kite titled "Fashion"? That way I would have never come upon this post.

If you replaced "The Borginsteiner" first reply with -

'Sorry man, but I tricked everybody by wearing a cut-off suit under the board shorts. Hope I did not freak anybody out. And thanks for the concern! Definitely track anyone down you think is not being safe and giving the sport a bad name by going hypothermic and injuring a bystander when they no longer have the ability to control the kite.'

That would have ended the banter in 3 post max and ended on a happy note. Remember, we are all 1 accident away from getting our favorite kite spots turned into a banned spot. Not a fan of violent localisim, but I predict that will follow the first OC kite ban because of a Kook - regardless if he or she is experienced or otherwise.

Thank them for identifying themselves. And with his comment about "taking care of him self", - well if you are the only two out on the water, he probably will not save you and you may not want to risk saving him as he will pose a danger to you with that attitude.

As the Coast Guard now considers kiters to be "Vessles",

Article98

Duty to render assistance

1. Every State shall require the master of a ship flying its flag, in so far as he can do so without serious danger to the ship, the crew or the passengers:

(a) to render assistance to any person found at sea in danger of being lost;

(b) to proceed with all possible speed to the rescue of persons in distress, if informed of their need of assistance, in so far as such action may reasonably be expected of him;

(c) after a collision, to render assistance to the other ship, its crew and its passengers and, where possible, to inform the other ship of the name of his own ship, its port of registry and the nearest port at which it will call.

Whether or not you obey this law as I do (and I will render assistance in any situation that will not endanger myself), you are putting me in danger by going out unprepared.

P.S. With my poor eyesight and typical concern for others - had I been there Friday, I would be in Foghaters' position right now of getting more heat than thanks for his concern. Takes all kinds, huh?

P.P.S. Update on secured patent

Sorry for the anti “Borg semester” attitude but my patent lawyer told me not to reveal my true support for his fashion sense until my rights were secured. I have been secretly working on a new wetsuit for the Oregon coast.

Say hello to the new 8/3(6)mm OC Man Thong! (patent pending) OC stands for Oregon Coast and here is our rough draft of the press release once we get production issues worked out.

[Bare almost all in the new 8/3(6)mm OC Man Thong! 8mm of neoprene means you can get away with less suit. So much less that we have made it into a man thong style capable of, and also being sold in a recycled/repurposed Campbels soup can. It’s all you need for the Oregon coast 50degree temps even on cloudy days. The thickness of 8mm on just a bit of your private areas allows you to keep just as warm as having a full body suit. The proprietary double aluminized neoprene reflects 110% of your body warmth back toward you to making it even warmer. The 3mm back side doubles up to make 6mm when secured firmly betwixt your nether regions. All outward facing neoprene is 8mm.

So warm is this suit, that we recommend using wrist harness hooks (circa windsurfing era, patent expired) and purchasing an old 2 line kite. This way you can even get out of the un-coolness of being covered by a bit of overly large and warm harness. We all know you are too tough for that.

Due to issues with unwanted backside irrigation of initial testers who blew big air landings, we are supplying the suit with a small wide flanged plug that fits either in the storage can or yours. And for those big air guys who get aroused with on those 20meter high jumps, the “Super Super SUPER stretch” 8mm neoprene eliminates that “Ouch! You’re bending it!!!” feeling you typically get in a standard super stretch suit.]
