Rollo, be careful at Lanes. I have friend that is just back from Lanes...he'll be out of the water for quite some time.

Here the wind is gone again, but a huge south swell just arrived so I kept busy Smile

I'd love to meet all you guys some day Smile

Hein: You can also tent camp on Flash beach which is just up wind of kitebeach...but I am not sure how safe it is.

Onad: They are beautiful animals! Very fascinating!!

Awesome you guys. What a great way to nail a trip! It makes this long break until spring a little less bitter.

That looks super burly Rollmiester - is there a channel through the reef or did you have to walk over it or was the tide just right? Inquiring minds want to know.

Monday was ... and I hate to say this .. schweet!.. The best filled in conditions of the trip. Also, the wind at the launch wasn't fluky as normal for the winter. Launched the kite and calmly walked into the cove. Very steady 9m wind. I know.. I know.. I always ride the 9 but this was brilliant!!

Wind filled in really nice Monday. You didn't have to go way out for steady wind.

PostWed Dec 20, 06 6:18 pm    12-19-06 Last Day... Departing Shots Reply with quote

Got to ride the last day. Finally left the beach at 2:15 to shower then head to OGG for a 4pm departure. Shocked
Lucky everything went like clockwork and we made the plane with time to spare. However, our flight was cancelled then rerouted to Seattle then late taking off so we didn't get to PDX until 2am. Sad
So.. I complained (a little) and got $200 from Hawaiian Air. eh.. what the heck.. that'll pay for half of my surf board

Noticing the conditions were still so good as we left.

thanks for all the photos--they renew my goal of taking years off.

last photos looked like there was absolutely no swell. i always had the impression that winter was non stop swell there, but maybe not? of the days there, how many had shoulder high+ waves on the good reefs?

did you wear booties for launching at lanes? that place looks very sketchy on big days, but apparently guys self launch there and make it work?

Gman, Gabe:
After asking a couple guys on the beach (lanes) I put booties on. You can get into a real mess here and the launch has to work right because of the wind shadow (wait for the gust). It was big but not as big as it can get on some days. I basically went out for a couple tacks and came back to shore. I understand it can get real ugly if you bail and get wrapped with lines.

Gabe: swell was definitely down the last couple of days at kitebeach though the wind was probably some of the best.

The swells are up and down, the bigger ones are much dependent on alaskan storms.

Monday, we had an insanely good south swell...that basically came from out of nowhere. Smile Great surf...of course the wind on Oahu still sucked big time.

I might want to write my dissertation on Maui....

I watched this guy self land at Lanes when I was on the island in March. He was very patient and kept the kite low as he worked it up the beach and then dropped the kite in the shadow of the small beach cliff.

Great place to kite, just not much margin for error… Confused ~D

Sweet pics Tom glad you got a couple more nice days in. Nice jump Mysery girl Thumb's Up

As far as booties, even the launch at kitebeach can be a bit sketch. There are several places with very large rocks right under the surface. I swam out to get someone's board and took about a 3 inch slice of skin off from one of them Shocked
