Wed Feb 11, 15 9:54 am Renting Directionals in LV? |
|
|
A couple kite starved guys heading to LV next week for first time. Anyone have thoughts or experience in renting directional kite boards?
And / or experience with Alaska airlines and bringing 6' boards from PDX to Cabo?
Any thoughts and help would be greatly appreciated.

alaska doesn't care what you are checking in. they only care about size and weight.
alaska charges $50 for oversized or overweight baggage - each way.
a 6 foot surfboard bag weighing less than 50 lbs is $50 each way (it's oversized).
i pack my surfboard with 3 kites and a wetsuit - 48 pounds. $50.
i pack the bars in my carryon.
not aware of anyone renting surfboards in LV.
best bet is to contact Playa Central. |

My brother just flew Alaska from LA to PDX. Surfboard checked through for free, no charge. It was in a 6' board bag. There policy is $50 but if your nice and the agent at the desk is in a good mood, it might go for free.
There was nothing else in the bag and fins were removed so it was 10 lbs or less. |

Alaska recently had a promotion that checked bags were free during January.
The promotion expired end of January. |

Another helpful trick with Alaska is to check in online, and pre-pay for your checked bags (there is no option for oversize when you do this).
When you get to the airport, at least 50% of the time they can't be bothered to run your credit card when you have already paid for the 48lb board bag as a regular bag. I've done this probably a dozen times, and only had to pay the surcharge a few times. |

My friend Adam takes care of the Captain Kirk kite center. He has a couple of personal SS directionals that you could obtain for some fee. He also has a foil board for lessons/rentals. The center also has some directionals, so you might be able to switch boards. It is worth checking him out. I used a SS Tyrant and a SS skim , but they had others too.
I went to LV last March and did not bring a board I used a directional from him. I took only a 7 and 10 + one bar in my suitcase, that was all. I recommend you check him out. |

that's the truth. the people behind the desk have a lot of leeway in how they handle this stuff.
be nice, be honest. we just carted three people's gear (boards, kites, harnesses, etc) to cabo, paid $29 each way. (this was during the january first bag free. |

You might consider Costa Azul. Alex Olea is the owner/shaper and set us up great with some very nice epoxy SUP's and long boards. He's got short boards of course.
KM 28 out of SJD towards Cabo.
