So I was noticing how much timber got stranded over the winter on the bar. Is there any plans for a cleanup effort or are we just going to ignore it?

Also not sure if this has been the case in previous years and it has just been annually removed, or if this was an unusual year for debris?

It's a serious hazard for kites, lines, and people, so I'd be more than willing to volunteer my time to help remove it if we have the means to do so... Smile

Hi Piero :

The CGKA works with the Port of Hood River, HR Sheriffs dept and the Corp of Engineers each year hosting volunteer beach clean up work parties.

Typically these work parties occurred earlier in the season, but due to the late season water levels being higher later in the season these past couple of years, the beach clean ups have run a bit later.
In order for the beach clean up to be effective, it must be done once the water level variations have ended and the levels start to constantly lower (beach clean ups don't do much good if you clean and then have following high waters bring a new slew of logs/debris).

One of the CGKA representatives is already in contact with the Port of Hood River about hosting a beach clean up and will post an announcement soon.

It should be noted and passed on to all persons accessing the Columbia River this month, that there is a larger than normal amount of loose and semi-anchored river debris.
I personally had two fins knocked loose just riding upwindof the Event Site the other day
In addition to the Sandbar, the White Salmon sandbar has LOTS of big debris just under the surface, same goes with across from the Hatchery, and around the shallow areas of FightClub.

Not to bring back a relatively old thread, but have there been any updates on a beach cleanup? Prime tourist season will be at full-throttle in less than a month so I am assuming that it would have to be fairly soon.

If the people doing the beach cleanup want some more help, I can definitely get the LEOs (Youth Lions) Club involved as I am one of the co-presidents. I don't know if details have been posted somewhere and I just missed it, but I didn't see anything obvious on this forum at least.

We noticed a broken-off surfboard fin today so this is timely. Not sure what you need for help, but I have muscle-power, huge cargo van with trailer hitch, and the next two weekends free, so let us know...

Would love to help pull those logs off the ES too. Perhaps someone with a PWC could help pull them into the river current?
