I was just in Puerto Vallarta in May. I didn't bring kite gear, but there were definitely kites out North of where I was at least 4-5 days of the week. Sayulitas definitely had surf, but I could see the locals being a bit bitchy. That said there's breaks all over the place from Sayulitas to South of Punta de Mita. Some accessible on foot, some possibly by boat. Seems like there should be plenty of room to spread out if you talk to some of the shops. We went to some beach about 10 minutes SW of Punta de Mita that is accessed by private land that only allows surfers to pass. When we went there were only about 10 people max on the whole beach (all surfers). The PKRA tour was in town the week before I visited so I'm guessing May is a pretty windy month there. Enjoy! _________________ The Slider Project, LLC

We have been visiting this coast at various locations for 26 years. May is great for winds and in 2012 May-June had over 31 days non-stop in Bucerias (just north of Puerto Vallarta). But, October as a rule is grim for winds. True, it is one of the months where a Pacific hurricane can surprise you, but the honest NW'erlie's wind machine is missing from the equation so your odds are greatly reduced. Take (or rent) a surf board and enjoy. _________________ CGKA Member

Punta da Mita to the south is where you will find the best surf at the series of right point breaks beginning at the lighthouse on down into the bay. Needs some size to get them to work, but is way better surf than what you will find at the local beachbreak at Sayulita. |

we went down there a few years ago and stayed at http://www.costaazul.com/ which was a few miles north of Sayulita. Every morning we surfed 'til noon or 1pm, then went back for lunch, cruised around town or sat in the pool and had drinks. I've never seen my wife so relaxed... even after she cracked a few ribs surfing head-high+ La Lancha south of Sayulita!
If you plan on surfing the right in Sayulita, bring a lot of patience. the locals have it dialed and aren't the most sharing sorts in the water. They're not angry, just not apt to call you into waves, so you need to prove yourself and kind of push into the rotation without being a dick about it. Great town to hang out, get decent food, and buy momentos. |
