Arthur just posted a 1930's era, pre-dam (to 2010) aerial swipe photo comparison of the Hood River and White Salmon. Use the round control at the bottom to swipe-compare. Bad ass;

Ice floes in the river and snow in the fields.

The ice was moving downriver fast enough that it moves between frames. When I aligned the overlapping frames to make the composite I had to avoid the icebergs.

This is my favorite post yet from historichoodriver.com. So much detail to study.

that's insane! I see what you mean about movement between frames! I'm so afraid of starting a discussion on climate change, but so much looks to have changed.

Before the dams the river had much less volume in the winter and the flow (mixing) was more turbulent, letting it cool much more quickly. I don't think the river has frozen over since the Dalles Dam was built.

There is a published report of pairs of people on ice skates holding an umbrella to power them from HR a mile down river (easterlies) before 1900. Don't think we'll see that again.

Now that would be the ultimate Gorge picture to hang in your house. Yesterday's wind was "umbrella like". Very Happy
