Fri May 16, 14 12:18 pm CGKA - Sandspit will not be submerged for 4th of July!! |
|
|
Each year during the 4th of July, the river levels are raised slightly to accommodate the safety concerns of the Lions Club who sponsor and run the annual 4th of July Fireworks show, this action would result in the sandbar then becoming submerged under water and restricting kite access to only the Marina and leaving intermediate/beginner kiters with no access options.
In an effort to attempt to find a solution to this increasingly difficult situation, the CGKA and the Port of Hood River approached the Lions Club to ask if they would consider not raising the water levels, thereby allowing the kiteboard community unobstructed access to the Sandbar during one of our busiest visitor weekend/holidays.
The Port of Hood River just sent us an email confirming that the meeting was a success and that the Sandbar will remain open, above water, and accessible to all kiteboarders during the entire 4th of July holiday period.
See the email below from Liz at the Port of Hood River:
Quote: | Just wanted to share the good news that the Lions Club has agreed not to request from Reservoir Control that the water level be raised for 4th of July. This is huge for us, because it will result in keeping the Event Site closed for kite launching and landing. Kiteboarders will be able to access the sandbar which will increase safety dramatically during the busy holiday. I am very grateful to Paul Zastrow of the Lions Club for allowing us this flexibility. The Port and CGKA will just need to insure that the sand area north of the Spit parking lot (about 100’ out) will be kept clear of spectators. |
Also, a great big Thank You to Adam LaPierre from the CGKA Board of Directors for spearheading this discussion for the CGKA and working with the Port to make this happen. _________________ Pure Stoke Sports

That is awesome. Thanks for spearheading that. I've never understood how it makes things better for the fireworks to have the water deeper. There is no fire danger below the waterline anyway. |
