I have two friends who broke their legs last year skimming in shallow water and another who tore his hamstring off the bone (avulsion) with the same. When you're cruising the shallows and the board slips out, you might go from 20mph to zero in a few feet. Be really careful about how you jump off when this happens and fill your suit with sand, rather than take a broken bodypart! I love skimming in the ponds as much as anyone, but be careful when you hop off!
Still, maybe the most fun thing behind a kite.
Also, I totally sucked at jibing on a surfboard and couldn't get it down. I practiced on a skim for a few sessions and hopped back on the surfboard, and voila! It worked!
Have fun and be safe! _________________ JHB |

Agreed! I took a spill on my skim in about 4 inches of water halfway thru a trip in Australia... Destroyed my ankle and the trip. |

And don't forget to bring a towel! You never know when you're going to need a towel!

I disagree. I always know when I'm going to need my towel. After all, a towel is about the most massively useful thing a person can have.
That's why I always know where my towel is. |

A skim will really take off when the water is 1/2 to 1 inch deep. The skim flattens out and turbo. I try to jump off before it gets to that level. |

as something we learned in tournament water skiing in ski lakes is that when you ski, wakeboard etc in anything 3 feet or shallower the water bounces off the bottom of the dirt, river etc and causes acceleration that is very noticeable. Skimming or skiing will provide a different feel in deep water vs. shallow water. just my 2 cents _________________ Take a breath; inhale |

I was lucky to have some climbing instruction with the great Tony Yaniro - he said there is no problem with your climbing just with your falling - and he made me take a dozen falls on lead
the key here is to think of the skim as a skateboard or the failing is as important as the riding. Shallow water or wet sand is really really fun, just need to first scout out things that are going fuck you up like rocks, submerged punji sticks, sand dollars, etc. when you are eating it - work on pulling in your limbs and sliding - this can be more fun than the actual skimboarding - certainly is for your friends
I'm so breaking my leg now for posting this... _________________ Go Deep!

this must be why when kiting in the ocean during a high tide, when you get really close to the beach and are kiting in 1 to 2 feet of water, you can go blazing straight up wind! seems like the last little bit, on side-on winds, i'm going parallel to the beach. that last little bit counts when sailing in one spot, vs. downwinder... |

Just don't try to stop yourself, the shock load is what breaks bones. Just slide in the muck, it's the most fun part. |
