Saw this article on Yahoo news today talking about the different names for regional winds. For example - " BORA" - A cold, very strong, dry wind on the coast of the Adriatic Sea and northern Italy occurring when pressure is high over the Balkans and low over the Mediterranean."

I was thinking it is time for us to band together and name some of our local winds! Maybe "cockaerels" - for the nice east winds we get near Rooster and Stevenson? I am sure there are some word smiths out there that can come up with some good wind names! Smile

I am pretty sure the west winds in the gorge are called zephyrs. It was also a great board company out of the gorge for a long time. Not sure if I am right but websters describes it as "a warm west wind."

wiki has zephyr as the Greek god of the west wind - or it is a light wind.

At least in the winter time, the east winds in the gorge have been referred to as "Coho" winds - presumably by somebody thinking of the Chinook winds along the front range of the Rockies...

Nukin' is definitely the name most people use for a good gorge day.

Chinook winds /ʃɪˈnʊk/, often called chinooks, commonly refers to foehn winds[1] in the interior West of North America, where the Canadian Prairies and Great Plains meet various mountain ranges, although the original usage is in reference to wet, warm coastal winds in the Pacific Northwest.[2]

Chinook is claimed by popular folk-etymology to mean "snow-eater", but it is really the name of the people in the region where the usage was first derived. The reference to a wind or weather system, simply "a Chinook", originally meant a warming wind from the ocean into the interior regions of the Pacific Northwest

On the North Oregon Coast we get some phat Elephantas!

Elephanta A strong southerly or southeasterly wind which blows on the Malabar coast of India during the months of September and October and marks the end of the southwest monsoon.

I like the "Elephantas." Chinook winds to describe the steady thermals at Jones Beach in the summer?

Diablo winds: the term I use when kiting at Rufus and the wind clocks to the NW.
The Fan: that rare day in the corridor when the wind is 18-20 steady and sweet.

Now we are getting somewhere! I like the "Diablo" winds. Very descriptive for Rufus. I have kited a couple of days of "Fan" winds around Wells and Stevenson. It seems to happen more often at Jones.

Yes, Wells Island has some of the best Fan days in the gorge, just cruisin around enjoying the scenery!

"Blowdryer Thermals"..... Bart V

"Big East".... Bill K

"15-to-30".... Everyone at the Sandbar

The wind that deserves special recognition is that incredibly steady 10 meter, 2 hour wind, trailing behind the slow marching wind line, that arrives on those hot August days, late in the afternoon. Those who have paddled out to Wells Is. on glassy still water, rigged kites in the dead air, and patiently waited, like highwaymen, in the sweet-spot of the river, and been rewarded by the phenomenon, think of this magical experience as a form of stealing the wind by "ambush".
