I have been wondering when ODOT would close off more interstate parking. Ouch! It always looked like a great place.

Something more effective than a hacksaw may be for the CGKA to do some investigating on why the recent parking changes.
I'd throw out the thought that if you are busted for parking in an illegal ODOT/Hwy zone, your car will not only incur a fine, but it will be impounded, so no bueno.
It probably just took either a couple of compaints, or overparking of the designated space.

The CGKA does have a representative that has been actively working with the city of the Dalles on creating an opportunity for legal public access to this location and the other surrounding locations.
It's not an easy task so it won't happen overnight, but The Dalles and it's Port/Public community all see this as a positive opportunity if it can happen.

Just like that other location we don't specifically talk of, Fight Club rules prevail.

Let me know and all members of the fight club about our next actions, what can we do, or could I do? Parking across the street is not a good safe option, BUT the only option if there is no other !!

Honestly, parking along an interstate highway is illegal not matter what the circumstances or situation.
We've been through this with that other not-to-be-named location where cars were getting rather ridiculously expensive parking citations.

It's a big gamble to take the risk of coming back to your car to find an expensive ticket, or worse yet find out it was towed away.

There was a recent death in the Dalles area due to a pedestrian crossing the highway, so this is likely a very sensitive topic for the Highway Patrol and would probably not be taken likely if someone were caught doing so.

The legal ways to reach this location are :
By boat
or
Walk/bike from the Discover Center down across the railroad tracks

Every state has different laws regarding the interstate. Oregon is one of the few states that allow bikes on the interstate with some restrictions. 10% of all Pedestrian deaths nationwide are from walking or crossing the interstate. I work with highway construction, the interstate(urban or rural) is one of the most dangerous places to be. Parking on the interstate except for an emergency is illegal. Some states choose to enforce parking more that others.

http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/HWY/BIKEPED/docs/freeway_ban.pdf

Bicycles and Pedestrians are banned on the following segments of freeway:
PORTLAND AREA
A) I-84: From I-5 (MP 0.00) to
Eastbound: 122nd Street (MP 10.25)
Westbound: Sandy Blvd (MP 15.14)
B) US 26: East of the Jefferson Street On/Off Ramps (MP 73.35), through the Vista Ridge tunnel, up to I-405.
C) I-5: from the Kruse Way / OR 217 Interchange (MP 292.20) to the Delta Park
Interchange (MP 306.70).
D) I-205: North of the OR 43 (West Linn) Interchange (MP 8.82)
E) I-405: Whole Length
F) US 30: From I-405 (MP 0.00) to 23rd Street (MP 1.99).

MEDFORD AREA
A) I-5: From the South Medford (Barnett Road) Interchange (MP 27.5Cool to the North
Medford (OR 238 / OR 62 - Crater Lake Highway) Interchange (M.P. 30.29).

Wait, is it 2007 again ?

When the highway patrol first put no parking signs up there I called and spoke with the local highway patrol. He said they had been counting cars every day for 6 months before the signs went up. On the weekend he said people were parking with their cars actually sticking out into traffic.

So whose fault is it? Ours.

Exactly. The internet rant isn't generally my thing, however, I've been holding-back for years... I hesitate to (make even more of) a record, but I drive back and forth between Hood River and The Dalles sometimes twice a day, and there's an obvious problem already. It's no secret that the idiot count is high in that area of I-84. I can't help but be pissed-off at my fellow kiter, who misuses the shoulder areas on either side and crossing the interstate. The reason that it's become even more restricted is due to the current way that it's being misused.

I agree wholeheartedly. I'd seen so many people park illegally when it is full. I've left several notes and talked to people I've seen do that. When I have brought it up, I've typically gotten flippant responses. It is so lame that they brought this on. Nobody to blame but ourselves. It is so easy just to go to Rowena when it is parked out.
