I am flying on united. The website says $200 each way. Anyone have some experience to tell me different?

For one surfboard? Damn. You may be better off buying one when you get there and selling it when you're done.

All I can say is Alaska $40 for 150cm Golf bag and one big suitcase. If you are flying to or through Mexico City they have surcharges and restrictions depending upon the time of the year.

Just flew Boise to Cancun on United and was charged $200 for kite bag. Did not get charged on the way home.
United rep, after measuring with a ruler, even lectured me that just writing "golf" on a bag does not mean it flies for free. I didn't mention golf and obviously didn't write it on the bag myself. He was just being a jerk or having a bad day.
I would not trust United with a surfboard.

United Airlines will accept one kiteboard or one bag containing equipment used in kiteboarding as checked baggage....but it does state wakeboards and surfboards get $100 charge Sad

I flew back from corpus last fall. they charged me $100 for my twintip bag. I argued but the agent would not budge. when I returned home I sent an email to United and they eventually refunded me $100.
just flew out of PDX with 2 surfboards and a twintip in a 6' surfboard bag to Cabo. $25 and a $10 tip at curbside.

Flew to Yucatan in Dec and home in Jan on Delta with a SS Golf bag and did not get charged on either flight. However, if it was a surfboard bag they would have charged me some crazy amount so I only brought a twintip and left the surfboards at home.

Confused Confused Confused

heading to oahu spring break taking a 6'6" double surfboard bag for the first time. i usually take a golf bag and never get charged xtra when flying alaska air. but im getting older (41!!) :-) and want to have my surfboard and twin tip without messing with buying or renting on the island so...
going with the board bag for which i probably will be charged, and 1 carry on. one or two tropical trips a year that i look forward to for months? oh well. will pony up if i have to. :-)
