Sat Nov 23, 13 6:24 am Rooster nuked out=new plan? |
|
|
Forum:
I keep watching Troutdale airport sensor on iWindsurf and it was a nice 30-40 yesterday, while Rooster was 'calm' 2m conditions.
Broughton Beach and Wintler looked a bit on the light side yesterday...
I'm wondering if anyone has ever launched around Sandy River Delta Park? It seems like a downwinder from the lighter SW end of Rooster to there might be doable on a 6m, or better point ride from a launch site. Its a good hike out there, and I think Jeremy may have tried this yesterday, said there was ice at river's edge...
Chinook Landing Marine Park seems like another option for good lighter Easterlies, and it is very accessible, right off Marine Dr in Fairview. I hear that there is a day use fee? And I don't know about wind shadowing from the few buildings to the east of there.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Not sure I have time to get out to Ponds today. I may go explore...

I should be at Rooster around 9. Possibly Ponds bound but would like to keep it closer. Airon, we'll ping you as we get better beta.

The mouth of the Sandy is usually pretty crappy wind in the fall/winter. Summer easterlies can be amazing there. It's possible to get good wind there this time of year, but most of the time not, and it's damn near impossible to figure it out in advance. You just have to go try. I do know you need at least some North in the wind. When it's good, we call it "Isla de Coche Norte". When it's bad, well it sucks. Bad as in lulls down to zero and gusts to 30. I'll hit it if I take my boat out, and if it's bad I move down to the island across from 192nd on Highway 14.
The area around Chinook landing can be good, but if you go downwind at all you're hosed. Fortunately the current is lighter there because the river is so wide. Should be a good launch to downwind to the airport.

yeah I discovered the "Henry's Spot" posts, and will be checking that out too.
seems to depend heavily on whether there is south or north in the wind.

I don't remember that thread, but I think Henry's spot is the mouth of the Washougal? It's jet ski access only now due to the freeway being extended.

I forgot to mention too: Downwinders can be very problematic between Cottonwood and The mouth of the Washougal. Even on totally nuked out days it can be too light to ride through that area. You have to visually confirm wind by driving Hgwy 14 from Cottonwood to the Camas marina.
BTW, Cottonwood is a park on the WA side, sitting just at the west end of Reed Island. You can launch there on nuked days, but the wind is usually squirrelly until you get out in to the main channel. Even on nuked out days the park will be dead calm if there's any north in the wind.

Got to Rooster and have never seen it that nuked out. Took a piss that instantly evaporated into mist and probably landed somewhere in the Pearl District. Too late for the Ponds drive so I backtrack to Stevie. Nice rollers but thought an eastie self-launch of the 4.5m could be a bit nuts. Totally dejected and figured better off to live today so I can try and kite tomorrow. Crazy Novemberlies.

You must of gotten there early, Ken. I got there a little after one waiting for the warm up that never was. Pretty steady 30-40..
Come check for me at Bob's on the nukin days, I'm always good for a launch.
The little south in it sure lit up some nice swells. Very steady direction today, yesterday was shifty as hell. Yesterday Brad, John and Pete got on that funky shit, no kiters today.

Hey Marc.....yep I was there earlier.....at least 40+ with the south in it. Would of been fun to have gotten out on such a big east day. Next time.
