Oy! That reminds me when I was going out with several other much more advanced surfers. You could save a very long and hard paddle out by jumping off the point, but you had to time it right. I watched my friends who made it look easy. I finally got up the courage and went for it. A surge came and slammed me back on the razor sharp barnicles. Sliced me up and thrashed my board.

Still probably better off than the guy in that pic! Shocked

I stand corrected, probably why I got munched, no timing. Laughing

‘Everyone else was watching the surfers out at sea but then I noticed this guy running,’ Mr Hughes said.

‘He was late for his heat. I could tell that he was anxious so I focused my camera on him. Before anyone knew it he ran and jumped off the cliff.’

He added: ‘The surfer had timed it perfectly and landed just behind the white water and paddled out

That is a pretty common sight at Steamers Lane on big swells. It looks way heavier than it is as the boys just time it right as the wave moves through and they jump off and on to the back of the wave in less turbulent and deeper water. It does look at bit photoshoped with the irredesent colors, but the rest of it is real and a regular occurance.

i say it is a little shady. I see no leash attached to his leg in the pic and you would be able to see the contrast when zoomed in. Looks like one little detail was forgotten!!

Plenty real. I've made the same jump in similar conditions many times, and every other person surfing the Lane that day probably also did (or never made it out). Likely he timed walking out to the end of the point with the last set wave and he's home clear after jumping onto the back of this one.

First rule of jumping off hard objects into surf is don't attach your leash....or you could end up like this guy:

It is fun when you bait someone an they bite. Very familiar with the caters news agency site. Very cool pics. Maybe we can all get off the computer and on the water if the east winds would pick back up!

That photo looks more like he jumped for safety than enjoyment. The rest of the wave was going to knock his ass in the water whether he wanted it or not!!
