Heading to Duluth next week for a wedding and wondering if anyone has any beta on kiting there. Just wondering if it's worth bringing some gear or not? I have a 7 & 10 and can bring a twin tip or surf board. Probably rather bring the Twin for ease of packing but if the waves are worth it I might go for the surf board too.
Thanks.

Are you talking about the Minnesota Duluth? If so, it can be epic. Bring something warm, as it is getting cold up there this time of year. The real problem is how often it is epic. There are only a few days a year when the elements line up, and everything is golden. Too often, it is windy, but too cold or snowing, so you really can't enjoy it. It is also tough to predict, but when the forecast is on, it will be on.

Looking at the forecast coming up this next week and into next weekend, I wouldn't bother bringing the gear. It looks like it will be light and raining into Friday, then just light and cold over the weekend. Enjoy the north shore instead, the colors are amazing up there this time of year.

Check all of the forecast before you lug your gear since good days are rare. This time of year it is all about frontal passage and isobars. It has monster waves in storms and 30-40 degree water so it is hypothermia sailing. I just about died from hypothermia one October in Minn. from a cold front that came through with 40 knot winds that hit me in the middle of the lake. I Barely made it back!

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'll just eat hot dishes, chug some maple syrup and look at pretty trees.

Lake Superior is probably 30 degrees already. Duluth has the really good weed though.

Well, Damn it!
It has been super windy for the last 3 days and I didn't bring any of my gear and I am kicking myself square in the ass. It hasn't been that cold at all (Oregon coast cold) and I even jumped in the Lake this morning to shake off a hangover (followed by a prompt sauna session). Some great people up here and a ton of potential for kiting. A couple of guys were out windsurfing today getting after it. Looked pretty rad!

These guys were getting after it though!

Hello F-One, I must apologize for the bad steer man. This weekend was about as epic as is possible on Lake Superior. I did not go up as I do not have a kite that is small enough for the conditions, but those waves must have been impressive. My 8 meter RPM would have taken me for a ride I am sure. I should have looked later in the week, and seen that front coming in and posted it up. These things do not come out of the blue, it is possible to predict them at least 3 days in advance, especially when they hit like they did this weekend.

We have a pretty stoked group of kiters and windsurfers around here that hit up the big lake whenever it is good. Glad you got to meet a few of them. This was all time conditions up there, and I wish now that I would have gone up, even if it was just to sit in the car an watch. Hope you had fun doing that at least.

Oh absolutely, I did jump in the lake to get rid of a hangover and then ran as fast as I could to the sauna in our beach house. You guys have a pretty special place up here and we are enjoying it quite a bit. With any luck the Oregon coast will be firing when I get back.
