Yesterday I tried to kite Sauvies on a S. From my search I have noticed it is not a favored spot due to water quality and bad wind, whatever. It was actually pretty awesome, and we kited Reeder beach see attached:
Even though it would seem from the map and sensor that it would have a clean fetch, the wind seemed more like it was side off rather than side on. I was wondering about trying this place in WA next time, on the other side of the river. Any info on this spot? Frenchman's bar?
thanks!

I went and checked on possible couve launches on saturday.
it looks like everything north of frenchman's is no access due to private property.
I did scout a huge beach south of frenchman's with good fetch for south wind. it's located right where the lower river road bends.
my concern is on those big prefrontal storms where we see lots of torrential rains, the water quality will be an issue. another issue with frenchman's setup will be the ships anchored there.

If you search on Frenchmans I think you'll find some other past threads.
I was thinking about Sauvie yesterday when I saw the wind was strait south and pretty steady. The one time we tried it, it was maybe a little SW and so if you didn't stay upwind, the wind shadow extended further and further from shore as you got north. Ideally it needs to be a little SE.

Sauvies was a good choice yesterday. Coast was way up and way down.
Frenchman's is intriguing...probably a good 20 minutes closer to us PDXrs vs Sauvie, and looks like cleaner beach. Looking at the map, it seems a bit straight south from Reeders so there might be some wind shadowing on the SSW days.
Wish we could launch from that wildlife refuge, the bend in the river there is perfectly NW to SE.

Kalama/Dike Access Rd works on a South too. I had heard that it can be very gusty and not great on South days, but yesterday a few us ventured and ended up with a nice 7m session. Then lots of rain...

I was out and about today so decided to check out wintler. good launch with plenty of sandy beach. did not attempt to ride, but just doing recon. it's straight onshore on a south. my thinking is tidal fluxuations won't be as much of an issue with onshore winds that hit the river at that point. actually wintler was a nice spot with plenty of beach. very little debri and/or trash on the beach. parking looked good, I don't think I would feel threatened leaving my car there. other places like out in frenchmans I would have more concern with break-ins.

years ago, we kited wintler (?) straight across from the airport. it was a decent south wind day. was tricky getting off the beach, as it was dead on shore. it was hard to get upwind initially, as you would get blown right back on the beach if you didn't blaze upwind on your first chance. but once out on the river, it was fine.
no one died. but we never did it again.
