Wed Aug 21, 13 6:49 am Fort Stevens parking and beach access? |
|
|
Hey all...
a friend and I are thinking of heading out to Fort Stevens for a downwinder today - depending on winds (it would have been good yesterday). But I remember reading something about the lots and/or beach access points being closed. Or maybe just lot B?
What's the deal? Where to go, where to park?
Thanks,
Mike |

Go to lot A or lot C. Lot b has been taken over for jetty construction/preservation work for the south jetty. It has a bunch of crushed 3'' rock there. Cops give out tix if one parks on the side of the road and poach.
Lot A is just south of b and lot c is the south jetty parking lot. Longer walk but cool. Watch out for the little prickly weeds on part of that path. |

Got a good one yesterday! Go up to the jetty, C lot, and get the whole run! More of a walk but not bad. Lot's of whales in the area. Looking good today again! |

Thanks - sounds like lot c is the spot - assuming the wind is good (otherwise it's gonna be Manzo). Is there much of a wind shadow up there? Do you need to walk down the beach at all to get to clean air?
Planning on bringing a bike for the shuttle. Is there a good place to lock one up at the shipwreck?
Thanks again! |

OK, to answer my own questions - the area just downwind of the jetty has some pretty funky air. I'm glad it cleaned up within a couple hundred yards or so. And the bike shuttle worked well - I did find a good spot to lock it up..
Best surf conditions I've encountered yet - far better than any I've seen at Manzanita in the 5 or 6 times I've been there. I was full powered on my 9m - probably would have been 7m at Manzo.
The 3+ mile downwinder to the shipwreck was beautiful. Next time we'll have to consider extending it... |

Were you flying a red kite? If so, you should launch just down from the jetty. . . waves and wind strength are usually best just below the lot b south access trail. Jetty to Sunset works, too, but after Sunset it usually notches down. Sometimes there is wind at lot b only and nothing at the wreck... Garth? Not familiar with that - is that possibly a bad autocorrect?
I was flying a white, black, and blue kite. Anyway, looking forward to exploring this stretch more... |
