Fun vid! But isn't the current wind powered speed record held by a kiter?
If so, it's not that legit if it has to be on a butter flat surface like that man-made ditch in Africa.

a friend and i did the 'kite the bay' thing last sepetember. Quite a few of the americas cup boats, including the oracle boat were out. Was really cool being out there in between them, with the golden gate, alcatraz, and the surrounding SF bay area all in view

Awesome pics OG! I can't imagine kiting around those things.
Some really amazing flying/sailing going on. _________________ Jeff

I believe the Vestas Speedrocket 2 has the record now. At 65.45 knots, this blows Rob Douglas' record away by almost 10 knots. So I figure it is pretty much out of reach.
More related to the original post, I would have liked to at least seen a speed kiter in the contest. Kai Lenny is extremely talented, but I wouldn't think a kid on a surfboard was the most qualified challenger.

Indeed! I'd say if we tossed Brian Lake on a raceboard with a Velocity into the mix, results would not have turned out anything like the video. Period! Kinda funny and ridiculous at the same time.

Emirates Team New Zealand won Race 3 when Luna Rossa pulled up after rounding the leeward gate. The Kiwis completed the course in 22:28 and posted a top speed of 42.34 knots.
Crazy fast in about 18-19 knot winds. _________________ Jeff
