|
|
Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the Blow Out this year. We had to reschedule from Saturday August 3rd to Sunday August 11th and we are sorry for anyone who missed the race due to the reschedule. However, it was much winder on Sunday the 11th and it turned into one of the greatest races ever in Blow Out history. 46 competitors launched from Stevenson and 43 finished, a 93% finish rate. That is the highest in Blow Out history, which is good because there was no boat support this year. Can't wait till next year!

Corey R. was the rabbit starter. Means he basically started LAST and missed first by 10 seconds. At least he found the finish line this year!
NEXT YEAR TIE ONE LEG TO HIS ELBOW!!! GREAT RACE GUYS AND GIRLS!!!

"Most Legit Blowout Ever!"
Look at everyone's race times. Barely any time gaps.
Felt like the most bad assed 1 hour, balls out, full tilt, 46 person drag race.
Everyone burned it and earned it.
You know it was tight group when the times that the riders clocked in at the 20th-30th places would have been top ten times in any of the past years blowout races.
Biggest props and "Thank You's" to the Bolstad/Gormley's for keeping this legacy (and the BOTG) alive and better than ever.
See you all next year!

Also kind of curious on the conditions that the racers saw. How strong and weak did it get? I'm guessing that conditions must have generally been pretty good, based on the high completion rate, and good times.
Any of the racers want to put up a race report for those of us too busy (and chicken) to enter?

We were kiting up near the Hatchery when the pack came through... Cory was flying... here's a shot of him my wife took as he passed by:

Winners (top 10) were on 14-17m (Rienstra had his 17turb and boots, Corey on 16?m and waterskis). Us mere mortals were on 10-12s. In retrospect I wish I had had a 14m, but it was a great experience and plan to be back.
As usual (from what I hear), it was strong at Stevie, light at home valley through Viento (I thought it would pick up by Viento but I was still workin the kite), and fun/nukin starting at the Hatch through the end of Wells. Mostly avoiding the crowd down at the finish. Basically, Mother Nature cooperated.

I was on an 8 RPM and was on the smallest kite in the race. I did a lot of kite loops the whole way down. I wouldn't have wanted to be on any other kite though. Even in the lighter sections, I felt I was on the perfect kite.

I was on a 13.5m Kahoona and a pretty gunny surfboard. (First surfboard across the line yesterday!)
It was a very close race all the way down. Tons of fun trading places with Brandon and Alex for about 5 miles or more. I was in third a few times and 6th a few times. Hunting for the best wind was fun and challenging.
Thanks to my kids and Carol for all the hard work and thanks to everyone who came out to ride! This is my favorite event of the summer!

17m, sheesh. I was up riding at the Hatch on a 10m and was plenty juiced. Def on the list for next summer!
way to charge it all!
Riding back in to PDX i noticed a green RPM on a random beach on Washington side, jsut upriver of Wind Mtn, maybe one of the folks who didn't make it.

I rode a smaller kite than the lead pack.
I flew an Airush Lithium 12 and rode an Airush Sector 60 set up in 3fin mode.
Like Shan commented, picking a safe size worked for me super comfortable and made the entire run smooth sailing.
If I had a bigger kite, I probably would have been much faster through the narrows to Viento, but well, hey, it's the Blowout. I was super happy with my results. Personal best for me either kiting or windsurfing (I've finished in just over an hour on windsurf gear and got 3rd place a couple a years ago).
