Hi! I'm new to all of this, including kiteboarding. I'm really interested in figuring out this exciting new sport. I've read every book, watched every tutorial I can find, and salivated over the idea more than enough now to actually go try it. I'm going to florence (south jetty) this Saturday to try tackling the challenge. It's really intimidating considering that every how-to I've found explicilty states that professional instruction is nessacery. I'm broke, and therefore can't afford instruction, the only reason I have the gear is because my dad gave it to me last november. So my questions are these: 1:dangers and hazards around south jetty area; 2:pointers and tips to teaching myself; 3:cheap lessons in the florence area (if any); and finally 4:anyone wanna come show me what I'm doing this Saturday??? |

Dude...Please do not take a full size kite out to the ocean with no experience and no professional instruction. None of us wants to read about your horrific kite accident/injury/death in the Sunday Register Guard.
Save up for at least a few hours of lessons, or ask your dad. A couple of beginner lessons will give you the background you need to at least try and learn on your own in a relatively safe location. My advise would be to take a trainer kite down to Florence on saturday and spend the day mastering that in preparation for your first lesson. |

You need to figure out the lesson portion first, forget about points 1, 2 and 4 for now. People get hurt all the time in this sport both experienced and beginner riders alike. |

Does your Dad not like you ?
Don't ruin access to a beach and give the sport a bad name.
Collect aluminum cans and save some cash for some instructions. _________________ Slingshot | Ride Engine |Try before you buy | PM me

That's what I figured the response would be :/ I can't afford a trainer k, ite, and my dad lives in California, when I asked him about it, he just said to use the full kite ach s a trainer, which sounded like a terrible idea anyway. Where should I look for lessons? |

second the above post. One day at Floras is like a week at the event site trying to dodge the craziness. Will and Andy are second to none. very competent and very fun to learn from. Dont wait for lessons and make sure you take them so we dont have to read about a dead kid kiting that was smashed on the jetty and then drug out to see. Make sure you can self rescue if you are heading to the water with a real kite. |

south of coos bay. I drive from portland and it is great butter. dont pass it up if you really want to learn. It is 15 miutes south of bandon or head south of florence past coos bay to Bandon. Lessons are about 160 for 3 hours including all gear, head set and watercraft to retrieve and coach at the same time.. It will be the best money you spent kiting and you will be alive to do it again. happy kiting. Ask for andy to teach and tell him Blakester sent you... |

I have two teenagers. I would never just "give" them any of my kiteboarding gear unless I wanted to read about them in the paper. Would you fly a single engine airplane without lessons? Even if you had lessons - Florence jetty is not a beginner spot............. |

It seems as though my username is throwing some people off, I'm 25 years old, just used the same username for 10 years on everything, haha. Thanx everyone, if I get rich, I suppose I might be able to start this sport |

Lessons are cheap compared to a trip to the emergency room (or worse)
Kiting doesn't cost a lot as a sport/hobby. But it does require an investment in lessons in the beginning. _________________ Jeff |
