Hi,

Bought my son a GoPro Hero 2, which I want to "borrow" to get some of those sweet aerial shots from the line mount. 1) Can I just use one of the standard line mounts that they seem to sell in most kite shops? 2) Is it imperative to get the GoPro water floater so it does not sink the lines should the kite come down? 3) Is there some trick to keeping the camera from going upside down? Others have mentioned that this can be an issue but not sure what the deal is.

Thanks!

yes you can use the original line mount on the 5th element setup.
the new mount will work fine too, it just holds the camera a little different.
there are a couple of issues you will encounter when using this on 5th element bars. first will be that it will be set quite a distance from you making you look small, however it will give a great panoramic perspective of where you're riding. second will be with the original line mount, it tends to bounce around a little bit more than the new generation line mount.
when the camera is mounted so far from a fixed point, like just above your chicken loop rope, it will bounce around a little bit more.
as for the camera going upside down, this will happen. if you can visualize what your kite is doing, its basically flying right side up one direction and then flying upside down going on your opposite tack. since the camera will be attached to your front lines, it will do the same thing. when I put the camera on the lines, I just make sure that the camera lens resides on the leading edge side of the front lines. it's almost impossible to avoid having the lines in the shot, but having them behind the rider is preferable.
as for securing the line mount, I always advise users to tether it to the lines in the event it works off from loss of line tension. one way to do this would be to order a set of camrig mount plugs. another way that is even less expensive would be to take a rubber band or hair band, tie it in a knot so there are 2 loops like a figure 8. catch one of the loops around one of the fingers and then loop it around the mount arm with line already in place and attach the other loop to the finger this will secure the camera and prevent it from coming off. yes the floaty will allow it to float and does not add significant weight. I like having the floaty door but it's not essential.
Here is an image taken from a 5th element setup in la ventana a couple years back.
