Sun Mar 31, 13 4:10 pm Jones took off this afternoon... |

I wasn't there, but I was expecting it. Between 3:00 and 3:30 Jones switched from east to west winds, and cranked up to more than 20 kts before 4:00. It's pretty close to the typical summer pattern.
It's not something I think we can count on (yet), but it's a sign of things to come!

Where do you get a reliable reading for jones? I've seen it posted before. It's on the Washington side right?

It's the non-free WeatherFlow/iKitesurf sensor.
And yeah, I think the sensor is over towards the WA side, to the east of the island.

I used to go to Jones alot, with the skyhigh petrol, not so much of late. But when I did there weren't fancy websites and sensors everywhere, so you would look for the temperature difference, as Jones is a thermal wind just like the Gorge.
Hot in PTown, cool on the coast, Jones is gonna crank. Comes up in the afternoon and often blows till dark.
Some great memories of Nuke Alley in the Windskip days. And four wheeling with the tweekers.

Yes Jones typically switches between 2-3 pm and blows till past dark when the summer setup begins. The Blue Moon night in August John and I were in Nuke ally till dark... was fun riding the incoming tide down wind with light fading fast, and packing up in front of our trucks with the lights on so we could see. Last Summer there were 3 days where coast was dead, VS beach through Rosie were dead, and Jones was 12m (one day) or 6-8m (the other two). Living in Beaverton it's about the same time for me to hit Jones or HR. And peak summer it's dodging kooks till you can get upwind to the WS bar or so. Jones usually has 6-10 kiters, and the busiest I saw was 20 (on the gorge dead days).
One note of typical Jones, Nuke Ally (WA side of the Island) is typically one kite smaller than the Oregon side. I can't count the times that I limped over to Nuke Alley to have to depower my kite in the alley.

Yes indeed. Many treats at Jones. Lets not forget to mention the wind shaddows from the huge ships and the sneaky way those things sneak up on ya.
No swell unfortunately...well maybe three ripples over by the White House.

There are times on the WA side Jones gets some 3' swells. When it happens it's fun coming back from the flats in the ponds to ride some small swells back I think it happened on the few Fridays Blaze wasn't there

Yes. That is when it was parked in HR. A bunch of us were kiting Jones the day that thing came down river headed out to sea. It passed one of those car barges like it was standing still, and those suckers move pretty fast. The swell made a mess of things on the beach for those that didn't see it coming!

You mean the kite eater Toyota ships... those are fun... know a few kites that people almost destroyed while standing on the beach when those roll through... Also the Channel marker (where the ikite sensor is), gets some kite attention when 3+ ships cross paths at jones (at least last year a Naish got hung up on it).
Another fun one is getting your kite washed off the beach when any of the ships come through...
