Hey all - Happy New Year. . .
So, I'm going to Kauai with the family for spring break - first time I'll be traveling anywhere and taking my kite gear (I just started last summer). I'm going to be taking pretty much everything (3 kites, twin tip, etc), but I was wondering whether people had an alternative to taking my regular big pump.
Obviously, your standard pump is pretty bulky. I've got one of those tiny hand sized (wank-o-matic) pumps that came with my trainer, but I'm afraid that by the time I got one of my full size kites inflated with that, it would be time to leave for home. I could potentially see using it to "top off" a kite if I could do the bulk of inflation with something else. Any suggestions? Or am I just going to have to cram my regular pump in with everything else?
Thanks,
Mike |

Wellllllll, I did consider that. I just wasn't sure whether there were any shops out there that would have them stocked. Kauai definitely doesn't seem to have the same level of shops and/or support that Maui or Oahu have. Not that I've really looked much yet...
I have been in contact with a local instructor, since I've been thinking I'll probably take another lesson when I get there. A refresher for my rusty skills, and a chance to work on some new ones (aside from not getting myself killed by overly advanced sites, and/or ginormous locals). Anyhow, maybe I'll check with him. Maybe I could get a loaner, They did say they don't typically rent gear aside from use in a lesson.
But still, I'm curious about other alternatives - perhaps for travel to areas with even less opportunity to pick up a local pump.
Thanks. |

The pumps are cheaper at sporting goods stores than kite stores.

Im sure someone will loan you a pump if you'll be kiting at a popular spot man. |

kited there a few years ago, there will definitely be locals kiting at kapaa if there is wind. people were very friendly, with not so many tourists kiting like maui.
we also kited at anini beach, but were the only ones there (ie don't show up without a pump?) |

Not sure how many big box stores are on Kauai? Another option: take an old one or a cheap one from Walmart. Don't bring it home; leave it for the locals. That will leave room for the inevitable souvenirs you bring home. If you pack your bags full on the way there you aren't going to have enough room coming home... Bringing the pump will help ensure you have enough room in your bags on the return leg. |

I usually bring my kites (2) as carryon with pump, harness and bar. I make sure to use the kids carryon travel allowance for myself. I put the kites into those airtight bags so they take much less space and I can fit two kites into one bag+pump. bar goes in the pouch on the outside and I wrap the harness around the whole thing.
one tip, if you use a vacuum bag, put the kite in the bag in a standard luggage before sucking the air out. Suck the air out of the bag while it is in the luggage and the kite will conform to the shape of the luggage which is very efficient. |

One other thing. I have read that some people take apart their pump and stuff clothes inside. I have never done this and have no idea if it works or not. |

Take a pump and leave it with a local, then you'll have space for the stuff you buy over there (Tiki man, T shirts, new board shorts, grass hat etc) that you want to bring home. |
