Hello!
In La Ventana Dec 25 - jan 4. Any suggestions for the following?
~Cheap ride from SJD to La Ventana for 2 people (2 large bags plus golf travel bag for kites and boards)
~Car rental exhorbitant during this time. Other options? Rather put my money into local food and beer. Staying in town. Is there a local taxi? Would I be a fool to roll up and try and network and carpool for basics like groceries, kite/surf trip to west coast when wind no bueno?
~ Is it easy to find rides for downwinders?
Ultimately I want to avoid a car. $600 to $800 during this time with insurance. Did not foresee this cost.
I appreciate any info. Stoked to be there SOON! |

I just made a rental car reservation yesterday for over Xmas. Only $50/week at Fox and EZ Car.
I typically rely on the insurance that comes with my Amex card.
If you search the forum you will find other options including public bus and shuttle service. |

yes, mexico has required supplemental liability insurance. This is NOT covered by any credit cards (Visa, Amex, etc). It was a surprise to me a few weeks ago, because I was expecting to pay $70 for the week, ended up paying closer to $270. I was PISSED... Alamo just prays on tourists, and I heard other rental places are the same. When I told him my credit card covered me, he pulled out the Visa policy and underlined all the clauses that limit liability and cover damage to the vehicle only. I then called my supplemental trip insurance policy ($70 to cover lost luggage up to $2k, emergency medical up to $10k air evac, etc) and they wouldn't cover it either. Ended up having to pay on the spot.
Some rental companies include it in the price online, others surprise you when you get there... in the end, I was happy to have a car and it was worth it. |

Basic liability is included in the basic cost of the rental car. That is required for the rental car companies to rent.
What the rental car companies try to force on you is supplemental liability insurance and other types of collision and theft.
As the basic liability insurance only covers 25,000 to 50,000 Peso's taking the supplemental liability is something to consider as it increases coverage by 10X.
According to AMEX there rental car coverage is for $100,000 of collision or theft. |

Rico - where exactly are you staying in LV? If you're within a quarter mile of launch site - no car is necessary.
I've done both - no car and rental car. Both have advantages.
The shuttle driver who drives you from Cabo to LV will stop in Los Barriles so you can shop for groceries. There's a decent grocery store on the highway where you can get basic stuff.
LV newsletter by email with ride options and shuttle. Send them an email asking to be added to their email list - ventana.view@gmail.com

I will be there from 23rd to 30th. I ended up renting an economy car. I don't mind giving rides to people since I will be there by myself and would be good to meet others. Feel free to drop me a message. |
