A simple check of the tide book could have prevented that whole scenario. Don't try to cross the bar on a strong outgoing tide and heavy seas, duh! I guarantee that these guys know the limits of their boats and had done this before to some degree. My boat was 32x14 with a planing hull. When I was running in following seas I could surf the waves.
