What is the BEST place to learn to kite board in December/January...considering Cabarete, Mayan Riviera and Barbados. Looking for a place with flat, warm water with dependable/steady wind conditions. Has anyone gone to the locations above...any other locations I should be considering?

If the trip is solely for you to learn how to kite go to an established kiting destination spot because you'll have more instruction options to choose from. You can be in paradise but if your instructor is weak......you will hate the experience.

For cheap flights, hotels and no worries about language, visas, currency or shots plus well known beginner friendly kite options........South Padre Island, Texas.

I love SPI, but Dec/Jan can be pretty hit/miss for wind and it can get cold - but its great for learning. Might be wise to wait till late Feb/early March - but avoid spring break (Texas week).

Normally SPI is starting to get cooler in December and January but so far winter is very late arriving. Kited last weekend in just board shorts. Went out yesterday for a sunset session in a shorty and was plenty warm.

The wind this season hasn't been as consistent as normal with a lot of very light southerly days. It might just be that things are late and we're going to have our normal November in December this year.

For mid to late January I'd suggest La Ventana as a pretty good spot to go. Very high probability of wind and not too bad for learning. SPI is usually good from mid February on.

SPI is very beginner friendly, flat water with lots of options for get out, plenty of space to practice but it hasn't been as consistent as normal. If you're only in for a week you might only get a couple of days. Stay for two and you'll probably get 7 to 10 days of kiting.

What Tony said...AND- SPI is the best for learning. Cheap to stay. Recommend SUPER 8. Kitchenette and $29 a night. The Tiki can also be a good deal.
