We thought of practicing behind the boat, without wind. It worked out great! There's a lot more time for the rider to set up and make sure he/she is in a good starting position with the board. Without being concerned with flying a kite, you can focus on keeping your body directly vertical over the board. You also get to practice your falls, which can be weird and scary with that big, thin foil under you.
It's such a clean, drag-free sensation that you experience once you get lifted. The response is quick and startling at first, but you learn to anticipate and control it. It's wobbly at first, but with strong feet/legs you can smooth it out. Feel the lift!
