Hello!

This is theoretical question, if I was over in PDX looking for some wind action and had all day Saturday and Sunday and was willing to drive say 2+ hours any direction.....

Where would people be heading according to the forecasts?

Apologies if this is sounding very random, I'm just trying to gauge what my options would be.

Regards,

Borg.

I'm going to a Mexican Potluck dinner this evening. I'm predicting warm and strong thermal winds on Saturday morning with lulls and powerful gusts. The forecast is for wind to be localized in SW PDX (10 minutes from downtown) and on a very small body of water. Wind should be and hopefully short-lived and die-off by mid-morning Wink Laughing

A good rule of thumb is to gauge forecasted wind between the Northern Waters forcast and the pinpoint land/ocean beaches forecast. Lot B and Manzanita are the two latter pinpoint forecasts. The map is interactive and you can move it around. Waters forecasts changes as one navigates North or South. Winds can be stronger or weaker depending on weather systems and time of year. Southern Coast tends to have the strongest winds in the summer and entire coast is probably storm/weather dependent in the winter.

Hard to find any wind for this weekend.
Coast would be the most slightly possible, with a very big kite, but that'd be a big roll of the dice.
Nothing showing for wind this weekend in Hood River.

Rooster Rock had Easterlies today (Friday), but the weekend looks light for the Gorge.
South winds for the Coast should reach 10-20 with some higher gusts possible between the rain showers Saturday and Sunday.

last winter, I drove from Hood River to Portland and back at least three times a week. Seemed like Rooster blew every single day, and blew big (opening for VS joke i know). Winter + Cold River + East is no combination for me, and I have no idea what works and doesn't for direction. Just sayin', seemed like there was big east winter wind until there was west wind again.

It goes all winter Thumb's Up

Warm rain can shut off the wind - 41 degree driving rain can rev things up (if colder time to get freshies) - just check the cam

Rollo and I got it today after lunch - fun 20 to 25 till the next front rolled in and shut it down

..

Thanks for all the input on this one, I've got hope now there will be possibilities...looks like Astoria is blowing as we speak, I'm guessing there are alot of people like me who will be looking for the wind and still kiting right through the winter months? I hope this is the case....... !?!

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge,

Regards,

Borg.

No there are not a lot only just a handful. Look up the "100 degree rule" with the search function on this forum. Kiting on the Columbia in the winter with low 40's to high 30's temps is dangerous to say the least. A few take on the challenge, but more will go to the ocean.

Most turn to the winter pow these next 4 months for mountain riding and or snowkiting or travel to sunnier and warmer places to kite on the water.

.....so that forecast Hilton looks really good to me, there is quite a lot of options I guess as to where the best spot will be ( from Capeshoal water to Cascade head just looked it up on google maps), I like flat water so I'm able to un hook but also like kicking about in the waves......

Where would people go, trying to narrow it down?

Thanks again for the input.

Borg.

Ps Sasquatch your post have been excellent to, couldn't find this 100 degree rule debate through the search, what am I doing wrong?

I'd also like to hit the coast tomorrow afternoon but I am not sure which spot is best. I have only been to Ft. Stevens so far.

In the search function type "100 degree rule" and select the second option/circle and there are about a 1/2 dozen threads. Sometimes I do it in the 90's but I don't like cold hands and gloves restrict blood flow and seem only to work for a short amount of time.
