Greetings Fellow Wind Lovers!
I'm making the move to Portland in January and wanted to say hello and introduce my self to the forum. I'll be moving from the lush windy and sandy coast lines of Northumberland in the United Kingdom. We have it really good here and spots that can accommodate any wind direction and living 4 miles from a beach helps as well.
Here is a link to a spot we like to call church, well my church anyway.....in my head.

I've been kiting for about 3 years and enjoy making the most of any conditions, if it's 'ON' I like to try my best to be there.
I'm looking for some like minded people who like to get out during the winter, I've got a couple of questions.
1. Is getting out in the winter an option and if so would this be heading to the coast?
2. Does anyone get out on the hood river during winter time?
Snowboarding will also be in the line up if the wind related activities don't materialise so I'll also need to tap into that scene as well.
I would be really happy if anyone who could help or advise could get in touch, adding me on facebook would be the way forward. Don’t be shy just get me added!
Hope to speak to some of you guys soon.
All the best!
Sergio. |

1. Winter riding is definitely doable. Both the coast and the Columbia River. Winter is mostly Easterly winds in the Gorge, and as such most of the riding is from a spot about 15 miles west of Hood River to Portland. Lots of winter riding on the Coast.
2. Nobody actually kites on the Hood River. All of the riding right around the town of Hood River is on the Columbia River. See the above paragraph for winter riding.
Lots of open space in the winter! Only a few riders brave the Columbia in December to February.
Welcome!!!! |

A lot of people actually DO kite in the Hood River.
I kite 90% of the summer in the Hood River. |

The air and water temps in the Gorge (Columbia River) get much colder in the Winter.
The ocean temps in the Pacific (OR coast) stay about the same year round, but the Winter winds are usually southerly, squally, rainy and gusty.
If it is cold enough that the rain is falling as snow on Mt Hood, I usually prefer skiing or snowboarding at Meadows from Dec-Feb.

In March and April you can sometimes get the "daily double" with fresh powder on the mountain in the morning and warm(ish) winds on the river in the afternoon. |

I guess it's semantics. I'd consider that area part of the Columbia, but it doesn't really matter what you call it. In the winter with the sand bar flooded over the casual observer is going to look at that spot and assume it's the Columbia River. Again, doesn't really matter. I was just trying to point out for the OP--unfamiliar with the area--that there really isn't a river separate from the Columbia for kiteboarding in the town of Hood River area. |

Thanks for getting back to me on the advice and the welcome!
Still no facebook friend requests but Rome was not built in a day...
I've got some theoretical questions I'm going to ask to gauge peoples thoughts...I think I'll create a new thread.
Thanks,
Sergio. |

If you plan to snowboard a bunch this winter, the pre-season deadline for pass discounts is this Sunday. |
