doe with a death wish at Cape Sebastian the other day.....went past me at mach 5...eyes bulging...breathing hard.... and straight into the surf... swell was running short period at 6ft or so. it got rolled a few times in the bigger sets...finally got washed in and to its feet and (wait for it)........went full stride back out into the surf again....
heard stories from fisherman of deer swimming way offshore and I've seen deer swimming out to Hunter's island which is the big island in the photo background. Didn't Kesey mention it in Sometimes a Great Notion? Anybody seen this behavior? I might do the same if I had tics or mange or something itching me. Maybe the thing was being run down by a cougar and was freaked....who knows...nutty

So how'd things end up? Did the deer come out or dissappear into the waves?

Seems like I heard a story about a herd or deer or elk panicing in Seaside and dissappearing out into the ocean.

I saw a deer once jump into the salmon river and ride the rapids about a hundred yards. After that it got out of the river walked back up and rode the same stretch of river again, and then again. It wasn't trying to cross, it could have done that easily. It just seemed to enjoy running whitewater...

Happens up here often with deer, moose and caribou. My guess is they are on an adrenaline full blown linear panic from being chased by a bear or some other predator. I've seem moose and caribou sprint right past me out of the woods right in to open water with no regard at all. No telling whats happening down there.

What's up with Nak and all these wild life stories? I've paddled rivers on two continents, never seen a deer walk up to try and get a better line down a rapid Laughing

I kite near the Jetty mouth, at sunset, tack out deep and pee while I ride, do I see a shark? Nope not once. Nak gets a random beach session, sees jumping seals, gets up-close visit from the landlord.

Some guys get all the luck.

While at Lookout Point lake, A fawn that looked out breath, I wasn't take any
chance of the animal being too strong,so I watch him for awhile ,when it looked like he was about dead,
I haul up on my lake board and he just layed still there still,and took him to shore.

There was no way out of there, cliffs where overhanging of all sides of him probably a 1/2 mile to shore,
Could be some animals get in over the heads

I have seen that behavior by deer in NorCal after the deer was chased by dogs. The deer ended up swimming about a mile offshore to ditch the dogs successfully with the dogs pursuing it. They are pretty strong swimmers and obviously feel that they can confidently outswim predators. My guess it was being pursued by a cougar, bear or coyotes and took to the surf. Probably would have some trouble shaking off a stalking Great White out in the surf.

Italian police busted two would-be marijuana cultivators after "unusually frisky" deer alerted the authorities as to the presence of their mountaintop dope plantation, UPI reports.

Locals in Trento began telling tales of the abnormally high-spirited animals, while forest rangers began to wonder why the normally shy and straight-laced cervine population was letting it all hang out by day and "making great leaps on the mountainside".

Rangers duly made their way to the top of the suspect mountain, and discovered "some plant pots and shredded marijuana". The pair responsible for the high-altitude high facility - a factory worker and a university student in their 20s - were cuffed when they ascended the peak on a harvesting mission.

Despite the seemingly damning nature of the prosecution's case, defence lawyers say the charges may yet be dropped since the deer had eaten most of the evidence. Reports that some Trento residents were awoken from their beds at 2am by pothead Bambis demanding bowls of Rice Krispies are unconfirmed. ®

Wooow! I dunno if there's a drive-thru pharmacy in the area anymore. Now I'm wondering if that deer at the cape may have been grazing downwind of the van with many stickers.
