Flew AA to Turks and Caicos last March out of Portland with Dakine SX bag with surfboard and twin tips- weighed 49.9#. Checked in curbside at PDX with a extra bag fee only ($35). In Turks & Caicos, they charged the extra bag fee only as well. I fly a lot with a 6ft surfboard bag and rarely get charged more than an extra bag fee as long as it's less than 50#, unless it's out of South Padre via Brownsville.

I fly AA a lot from my home base in Turks & Caicos with kite gear. Most gate agents don't know the difference a surfboard, kite surfboard or an 10ft. SUP. The rate for Surfboards is normally $150.00 each way. We use a coffin bag and can stuff at least 2 surfboards in without attracting any bother, 3 boards can be pushing the envelope. Pays to be early at check in and friendly with the agent too.
When I'm transporting twin tips, I usually describe them at snowboards and they can go as regular checked item without any additional fees as long as you're under the 50 lbs. |
