I kited on the cape a ton before moving to Oregon a few years ago. The locals on the cape can be a bit uninviting. But there is a great active community in Boston that kites the cape a lot as well. Much more friendly and helpful group.
Check out the local site @ www.masskiting.com
There are a ton of spots to check out.
I reccomend going to Waquoit Bay (S/SW winds work good here), Chapin/Mayflower beach on any wind with a North component, Hardings Beach (W/SW/S winds). Other spots too but these are some of the most popular. Be sure to check the local rules, Cape Cod is heavily populated with piping plovers and the beach restrictions/rules must be followed. We really are spoiled on the West coast where there are no rules/restrictions for kiting.
This time of year the weather can vary a lot. Check with the locals to see what suit to bring. Average kite size is 8-12m. |

I moved here from PDX about a year ago. The kiting is great when it blows. And like Chooch said, the locals can be douches at some spots, but don't let them bother you.
This time of year, depending on wind direction, you can kite near others, or find a spot five miles from the nearest kite - it just depends on what you want. You can also find waves or flatwater with pretty much any wind direction if you're willing to drive. Feel free to PM me and I'll be happy to give you recommendations depending on what the wind is doing. The Masskiting.com site has nice descriptions of many beaches.
I ride an 8 and a 12. I've been riding my 8 more than my 12 the past couple weeks. I've still been using my shorty, but I think it's full wetsuit from here on out. The water in Buzzards Bay was still 70 last week. |

I based myself out of Truro for many years. I was fortunate to rip it up all over the Lower Cape (Harwich, Brewster, Chatham, Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown). As mentioned, there are endless combinations and permutations of wind, wave, flats and slicks depending on wind direction, tide and launch site. The mags (neither kiteboarding nor windsurfing) have ever really nailed down the Lower Cape. It's a kiting utopia with a ton of solitude! Get with the locals. If you need an in, hook up with someone who lives the dream, Eric Gustafson, http://funseekers.org/index.html , and he'll give you the facts!
Rip it up! |

Hey cool, glad this got bumped! I'm staying with my sister in Weymouth right now and it was warm and windy today - coming back for my nephew's wedding in late June on the Cape and was wondering whether to bring a board and kite or two. Used to windsurf West Dennis oh so many years ago before moving out west. |

June is summer so winds are generally lighter 12m+. If you ride a big kite bring it otherwise a 9m as kite #2. You can kite Nahant which will allow all wind directions.

At dog beach which is across the way on the harbor side just walk out past the rocks! We had an accident this year because once on person makes camp, many do and the rocks are not cool. But the view of the city during a warm sunset is awesome! For a short stay that might be your best bet if you cannot make it to the cape. Just cause of the directions you can take. But cape for the day is ideal!
Just hit me up on that site when you come _________________ www.masskiting.com

Just came across this post and looks like some great info here. I sent a PM to you Johnny, but anyone else that can throw some advice my way would be much appreciated.
My buddy and I are headed out from upstate NY to spend 5 days kiting this Thurs. through Monday (9/13-9/17) and are looking for any info from anyone that will make the trip better.
We're taking a lesson from Eric at funseekers on Thursday afternoon, we're camping at Nickerson the whole time and are just looking to spend lots of time in/on the water.
I hear that good beginner spots are West Dennis Beach in S, SE, SW winds and Chapin Beach in W, NW, N, NE winds...
We've both been kiting 3 seasons, but not enough time in the water. We can launch/land, get up on our boards riding regular and get short rides. We're hoping, by the end of the week to be riding both directions and maybe even going upwind a bit to avoid all the walking.
Anyway, any other info anyone could give us would be MOST appreciated. Any other kiting beta, good bars, places to eat good seafood without breaking the bank?
Thanks!! |

Thurs and Fri are looking south. West Dennis is an obvious option if it blows since it's very beginner friendly and close to where you will be camping. Keep an eye on Waquoit Bay and WestFalmouth/Chapoquoit if West Dennis doesn't come up. Both would involve about 45 min drive, but it sounds like you guys are motivated. You can find descriptions of both spots on Masskite. All three of these spots tend to blow strongest in the afternoon/late-afternoon.
Sat and Sun are both looking north. You guys will love Chapin if it comes up. Chapin changes dramatically with the tides, but is rideable at all tides. If it's blowing early get after it asap because cape cod bay tends to turn off around mid-day/early afternoon.
I hope the wind shows up for you. |
