Thu Aug 09, 12 1:41 pm Is the Event Site closed this weekend? |

The Mai-Tai kite event is listed as having exclusive use of the event site this weekend (Friday and Saturday).
Anyone know what that means?
Does anyone know if they'll allow the public to access the sandbar from the event site? |

The Port of Hood River has issued an exclusive use permit for the MaiTai Camp for the dates of 8/9-8/11 (Thurs-Sat).
BUT, since the organizers do not require absolute exclusive use of the Event Site, they are allowing kiteboarders from the general public continued access via the parking lot and the standard pump and dry zone.
Launching and landing via the Event Site is only allowed for the registered camp participants via their specific fenced off launch/land area.
Parking will be limited, depending on how many spaces are available, so first come./first serve.
As these guys are being gracious enough to not restrict any of the kiteboard communities current access privileges via their event, we do ask that all you guys/gals please respect their event boundaries and the participants who are out riding.
Thank you

Anyone know more about it? | My take: Mix-up of Big Bucks and Big Ideas. A scheme to introduce the kiteboarding industry to guys with "loose-change" who might get excited and throw some coin their way. _________________ Slack Lines Suck! |

For any industry Mai Tai is a cool initiative to highlight the Gorge as a prospect start-up, or relocation, spot. Also, after getting to know my fellow kite brothers and sisters is a vast majority of them already telecommute for work so there is talent representing many diverse industries within our sport so tapping into the potential makes sense. This area is an ideal think tank incubator and more engineers need to "see" the potential so creating a chill vibe event while you learn to kite and have some fun seems like a no-brainer concept. Since May I can count the days I haven't kited on 1 hand and 95% of those days are from the Event Site. No chasing wind. No long "will SI or Jones go today" thread bs. You can work here 9-5 no problem and still get a 2 hour session in daily so the Gorge to me is one global location you can have a life...and still be a private kiteaholic.
I wish Mai Tai much success in their recruitment efforts since to me the real business warriors are the local small business owners trying to generate income from the 10k local residents and seasonal Portland tourists. That's the tough gig in my opinion.
On the selfish side the event allowed me to kite next to Cory Roeseler yesterday while he carved upwind on his kiteski (circa 1987 I think?) It was like watching the Godfather mixed with Moses parting the Red Sea type of moment. Not sure when I'll ever see that again but he is the original steez ambassador for sure. |

The local paper said Mai was short for Suzy Mai. After seeing her latest video, she can have the event site any time she wants. |
