Sun Jun 24, 12 8:38 pm Screw AcuraLink - I want WindLink!! |
|
|
OK so I bought a car with the 'tech' package, which is the new thing these days because cell phones aren't distracting enough. So the car is basically connected to the Internet, which opens up a whole new avenue for auto manufacturers because 1) they can do remote monitoring and management, lowering costs and defending warranty issues, and 2) they can provide 'cloud' services to your IVI (In-Vehicle Infotainment) system, opening up revenue streams (for example Sirius/XM, parental monitoring, etc.).
So I get three months' free trial of AcuraLink, which is basically their brand name for real-time traffic reporting (has proven useful where I live) and real-time weather reporting. But what I really want are real-time wind reports! (Andy, are you reading this?)
Anyone work for Acura/Honda and/or iKitesurf? Who's gonna make this happen for me?? |

I got one of these for my Sequoia, pretty nice to be able to watch movies as I drive:

I kid, it's just nice to be able to setup the rear DVD player without having to get into the back of the car though. |

Maybe I'm a freak but the BIG brother thing scares me .
I can stick my thumb out for a ride if I need it , then again I maintain my vehicles so it's highly unlikely I'll ever need to , and want my kids to make mistakes in life . We ALL do . Did you tell your parents everything ? I don't even want to know some things .
I just bought a 2010 Ford Escape and it has the controls . No My Key came with it . $450 at the dealer to get it . Real good deal Eh!
Insurance companies would like to see this monitoring in all vehicles too I'm sure .
Oh , Sir you travel too much or on the wrong roads so thats the reason for the astronomical surcharge that you can do nothing about as the direct link to your bank account has already been hit and there's no going back !
Excuse my rant please .
Enjoy your new vehicle and it's gadgets thats the main thing !

Big brother's been watching us for many years (and listening since before I was born). Lots of organizations have lots and lots of data on all of us, the scary thing is when someone figures out how to tap into and correlate it. Insurance companies LOVE to see this monitoring and already do to a degree. Your garbage man and that UPS driver are already being measured, as are a good number of freight haulers on the road.
Not sure about the protocol but a lot of the early systems used GPRS. I got the car back from the shop today because the satellite transceiver needed replacement (I certainly got the extended warranty with all the electronics crap that can go wrong, though my first Acura had over 330K miles with no problems when my friend totaled it). When I paired my phone it asked permission to use my carrier to schedule appointments and exchange information so I suspect there's some piggybacking going on. So yeah, there are lots of ways someone clever can access my info! (I also use Google Voice - tell me there's no spying there!).
JackZ if you're not freaked out enough look up CarShark. Imagine playing an mp3 song that hands control of your braking and acceleration to a rogue server on the Internet. Some folks at UCSD and UW did this in a controlled manner. What makes this possible is that the current generation of cars uses chips with a single CAN bus - the internal control network - and it's used for engine control, diagnostics, and audio control (which is where the vulnerability can be introduced). Newer chips are coming out with dual CAN controllers mainly to address scaling to all the computers in use now, but at least this problem can be addressed with bus isolation (and better software development practices).
Meanwhile on windless days I bike commute so I don't have to get spied on while sitting in traffic ... |

So Forrest I guess with that lockpick I could run the iKitesurf app on an iPhone or iPod Touch and pump it to the screen, though I doubt it would integrate with the Acura's dashboard control knob (which is much safer than fiddling with the i-thingy). The other cool feature is voice recognition, so while Song By Voice is nifty I'd rather be able to say "Wind, Rufus"... |

OK , I wasn't freaked enough and read the article and the responses .Thanks for the link . This is some awesome shit that made my head spin . I'm a 55yr old mechanic with limited knowledge of computing electronics . We have systems on our Cat equipment for sure . Hook up a lap top and do all kinds of things . What actually happens in there is someone else's business and I see it's a lot of info .
I cant imagine going through all the effort to hack into someones vehicle systems . Unless as stated in one of the responses , a bunch of engineers with extra time .
I love the remark " my car comes with a firewall " I can at least with my limited knowledge have a good laugh at that !
I also would like to ask where the wind is and get a response . I think it's unlikely as when is the weatherman ever right ?!
Have a great day .

Aren't firewalls standard in vehicles since like the 70's. Between the motor and the cabin?
LOL.
To a Mechanic one thing, to a Computer/Network guy something completely different... |
