Holy shit man! You complain about it, I take it down, now you're complaining about that?? Look, if you didn't think it was a big enough deal that it should have been removed, then why not leave it alone and not make the comment that its "not the best way to portray kiteboarding when promoting safety..." of course it isn't... it was meant in JEST... you're very statement shows that you completely missed that point. But anyways, you got what you wanted, its over and done with. Its ok to poke fun at ourselves once and awhile, but obviously your sense of humor was too limited in this case, so you had to take it seriously, and I've resolved the situation by removing the problem you felt so compelled to comment on. I think your post was an over reaction... the sign was obviously done tongue-in-cheek, but that didn't stop you from getting all serious about it. Jeesh... lighten up... |

Yeah, maybe you think that if your from the gunshine state. Have you ever seen a box kite yank someone 30 feet in the air? Perhaps the better question.. have you ever even seen the sand bar? Do you know where hood river is on a map?

Getting a little OFF TOPIC here guys. Its about safety at the event site, remember?
That sign is just about perfect for that area. No one reads the sign that's there now.
A LARGE VISUAL DEPICTION IS PERFECT. people are too busy (or too stupid?) to read anymore, so the sign says it all. And non-english speakers get the message as well.
Just add a big DANGEROUS AREA!!! at the top and its perfect!!!
Or to really inflame Salmon Slayer show the kitelines decapitating the hapless child.
(tasteless humor? or Scary possibility?)
Its not the getting bonked by a three pound pillow thats the issue so much as the piano wire effect of a tensioned kite line that scares the hell out of me.
Kite safe, have fun, and KEEP BREAKING THOSE KITES!!!! (SO MY DOGS DON'T STARVE)

That was the original rendition, but it tested poorly with the 30-45 year old market...
I think one point that's been missed in this thread is just how fluky the wind can be at the Event Site launch area. Last Sunday & Monday there were times where the wind at the grass launch was almost completely off-shore. With gusty, up & down conditions, and often a constantly shifting wind direction, launching from the Event Site can be challenging for even the seasoned pro. I saw several very experienced kiters have their launches go bad, and unfortunately the "runout" area is the little beach where the kiddies like to play. Its even more likely that a kite may end up there during landing. It just makes that area not safe for the family & kids while kite launches & landings are in progress. The Event Site launch is not for beginners for sure, but even experienced kiters can be hooped if the wind just suddenly drops as the kite is being launched or landed...

I would rather wear this logo myself. I think this is a better representation of the sport.
You can buy them at 2nd Wind and 2nd Wind is sponsoring KB4 Cancer, so it is all for a good cause.

As an outside view, I would suggest that asking people to remove themselves from an area if it is not a designated wind area will lead to trouble.
We have a few overzealous riders here, and even in a wind sport designated area telling people to move leads to complaints. Now there are way of going about this, and one way is to be overly nice and humble when talking with people. It takes time, and effort.
One way of going about it would be to have get a regulated site. Note though that apply for it to be a wind launch area might not have the effect you wish since regulators are already overworked and under paid, so bringing things to their attention is not always smart...maybe someone know someone in a public office..ie have a foot inside?

It is a designated area, and there is a sign posted outlining the danger of the area. Its a small confusing sign in a bad place that no one sees.
There is a great park for the kids with a nice beach and no kites 300 yards downriver, and several people were thrilled to learn of it when I made the suggestion.
The one guy tho, with his three kids playing in harms way, that told me he was a kiter, and knew you just needed to pay attention, should not have been allowed to procreate in the first place, but I guess you can't legislate against stupidity.
Soon the sandbar is back, with room to kook it up for everyone. GET YOUR KOOK ON!!!!!

You're telling me I have to be from your neck of the woods to know common sense? First off, several people have come to me or I have offered advice for their trip to sunny Florida. I'm not sure what the refeence is to "Gunshine" but I'm certain you have your own local problems to deal with. I hope you enjoyed your trip to Naples a few years back. You sent me a Thank you PM.
Before you started kiteboarding or maybe if you ask a friend who has never seen kiteboarding, did you realize the danger of a kite? Did you know how much force it had? Most likely not. I may not have seen the infamous sandbar, but I can certainly tell you I have seen more beaches banned then you have. And it almost always relates to how the kites affect the safety of non-kiters.

This is the same post every year either, sandbar or sauvies and now Event Site.
There is a simple solution..... everyone just help each other to be safe and if people who aren't kiters are in a bad area just nicely walk up to them and tell them a kite could fall on them and there is nicer place to sit right over there or go down to the brand new park. Most tourist don't even know that swim beach/park even exists.

FYI...The general public doesn't read this form duh! So maybe if you just take the time and inform people that they are in "danger zone" or "potential danger zone" and explain the risks, that would help with this problem. Half the people that come down there won't read signs, and the other half can't read, so just go up and talk to the potential victims yourself. It is called being pro active. You all have a voice.. use it..
And on another note, if someone is launching your kite don't say "when ever you feel it" your the one connected to the kite not them, they are just their to keep your kite off the ground. It is your responsibility to tell them to let go not the other way around, you are the one flying it.

You hit the nail right on the head! Saw a parent with his little kid getting pretty darn close to the lines of a kite being launched on the launch pad on Monday. Walked up to them and asked them respectfully to stay away from the lines as they can be dangerous. The guy smiled grabbed his kid and walked up to the kite parking zone. IMHO it is both the pilots and the person holding the kite responsibility to make sure the area around them is safe for launching, especially on a crowded day. It's unfair and unrealistic to expect bystanders and beach goers to know how to behave around kites/lines. We are temporary guests on the lawn at the moment and it is our responsibility to politely and respectfully educate the public about kite safety if we want to keep that privilege a little longer.

Got my 1st trip to the gorge last weekend. Launched early on Sat. at the event site before any crowds arrived & was floored at the volume of people by the time I came in. I was amazed that it went as well as it did & the overall helpfulness of everyone coming & going.
Just wanted to say thanks for 4 great days of wind & a whole new perspective on the Gorge happnins. Got to meet Blowhard & wish him the best & recovery & just wanted to say say thanks for the anonymous helpfulness despite the melee of humanity. Not quite like MT kiting & it was a great time.

Very cool you got the goods Lew and appreciate the positive feedback from somebody that knows how to get their kite on. The event site gets busy.....BUT....the positive stoke and great people is always present plus the river is huge. It's really simple; Launch, head upwind and you'll find play areas as far as you can see.
