Sun May 06, 12 6:23 pm Ban on Kitesurfing ! |
|
|
New York State Parks have a ban on kitesurfing for all beaches.
http://www.change.org/petitions/new-york-state-parks-remove-the-ban-on-kitesurfing
We are unable to kite legally, which is not right, please help us to change this. The more people that sign, the easier this will be in the long run. Thanks for any help you provide, this will not be a one man job, I'm trying to do this so we can all enjoy the sport that we love. It's not fair that we cannot setup wherever we desire and go out for a session. Freedom is the basis of America and it's time to fight for our right to share the ocean as well. Please take a few minutes of your time to help save some kitesurfers the anguish of not being able to go out and do what we love. Thanks again ! |

Are most beaches state beaches? That seems crazy. There's so much beach on Long Island, banning everywhere seems nuts! |

Thanks for any help you guys have provided, I'm really trying to push this to pass we need our beaches its not right that we can't go out and kite wherever we please as long as we stay at a safe distance from swimmers, etc. If you could post this on your facebook and have your friends sign we would greatly appreciate it ! How is it that we keep saying we live in a democracy/free countries when a few can dictate what we all can or cannot do.
Anyway just like any rule there is a way around it. Use a boat and set up and launch from it, if the beaches are closed. Is that possible or has kiting been banned period.
It sucks.
Good luck with your efforts.

Signed. Has any explanation been given? Have you contacted your state representatives? A petition is a good start, but it won't be enough. You need to organize some kind of association so that you have an official voice. The more members, the better. Find the reasoning behind the decision, it will be faulty. Attack the reasoning, not the moron--I mean government official--behind it. It can be done, but it will take hard work. |

If you start with the assumption that the govt official is a moron, good luck to you sir. Kiting can be a pain in the arse to civillians.
At one point 6-7 years ago there was a kiting ban along most of the Chicago waterfront parks. I used to live near one of the parks and was friends with the husband of an alderman (alderwoman, alderperson, whatever). I wrote her a very respectful letter saying "the plusses outweigh the minuses". (Lots of other people wrote letters, went to meetings etc). The ban was lifted (for the most part) and people kite in Chicago today.
Bans like this are shortsighted, but not dumb. Noone ever got fired for buying IBM, and no govt official ever got fired for banning an activity that looks like it came out of a mountain dew ad.
My two cents. |
