Just curious how you lost your kite. (someone else got his kite) Did your leash fail? if so how?
Glad you made it in, scary how far out you were!
(Just about froze myself out on the ten minute body drag)
Aside from all that, sure was a fun sesh!

Forgot his leash.

You can really only forget one if those two things and it still be a mistake. Both of them mean you made a choice to play it unsafe. Then look what happens?.......

Wow that's a hell of an inauguration to the Event Site... Super impressed with the whole local kite crew that day... I was in the flat water behind the new sandbar by the White Salmon River, and then came way downwind, turned around and saw Dangler, Sean and several others heading hard upwind back towards White Salmon. Didn't even notice it all go down... someone (Kevin?) managed to grab the guys kite, someone else got his board, and Dangler brought the poor guy in. I think Dangler probably saved that guys life... guy was way out in the middle of the river, west of the White Salmon and it could have been a long time before anyone would have been able to get to him... water is still pretty cold. Still, thanks to NW crew, that guy got back to the beach, didn't even lose his kite or board. I don't think a six-pack is going to cut it... |

In my opinion this guy was making some scary big boy decisions without his pull-ups on.
Being out this time of year in chilly conditions as a beginner can be fatal. How and WHY would you go out sans leash and think its OK ?
Please respect the river and the wind. DONT go out in conditions that are above your abilities, you are putting yourself and others at risk. Sounds like Dangler and the gang risked a lot to save your bacon.

Dangler definitely deserves mad props. That water was frigid!
Yea I dragged the kite in. You need to carry the kite just as you would on land - LE up. Hold it with your back hand and let it trail. Power up your kite and fly with your other hand. Once you get moving its NBD (no big deal).
Dangler 4ever. I dreamt I tore my kite after slamming my kite in a tree last night- he stitched me back up. |

Gorge kiters are the best.
The Kiter came in here after and was very, very glad to have such a great kiter community helping out when the chips are down.
He has left town now but said to say thanks to all. Nice work boys

This is a great lesson for everyone on the importance of the kite leash and the multiple reasons why its important. I myself never fully thought it out until this event.
Why Leash;
1. Its am important depower mechanism when you let go of the kite altogether.
2. You put other at extreme risk when kiting without a leash. Let go of the kite and it can ensnare others and then fully power up.
3. The case in point. Let go of the kite in cold fast current and all of a sudden your life is at risk.
So next time you forget the leash in the car make the trek back for it!... |

Setting aside the leash issue.
The issue is not the leash IMO. You guys are trying to place blame on that one item. Im sure many of you have gone out without a leash. In fact, you will see many Pro rider videos where they ride without a leash. Not a good example IMO. Im not saying its right. In fact, I would never go out withouth a leash.
The real issue IMO is being out too far that if an equipment malfunction occured......ANY equipment malfunction.......you will be in the same position. Always ride within your limits. Any one of you, leash or no leash, could be in the same position if you were out that far and something broke.
Im not sure how far out he was, but based on your input, he was out too far. Same thing I guess for my neck of the woods would be kiting in offshore winds without support.
