Mon Apr 23, 12 12:03 pm anyone ever kited this spot in florence? |
|

Not that there is anything wrong with the Jetty that 10 more kites wouldn't cure but wondering if this spot might be fun for a change of pace?
You can't tell from the pic, but it totally floods up to around waist height, maybe more. Pretty warm water too.
Wind is gusty in there, by Flo standards, but perhaps not so by Oregon standards
My family calls this area "Deadwood", since there is "no law at all". It's really, really empty, although not very hard to access with a small boat.
Car access perhaps not as good, never tried to get there from the other side.

Gusty winds usually means getting yarded downwind at times. That spot looks like you will end up yarded into a bunch of willow bushes. Why bother when you have one of the best kitesurfing spots on the west coast right there. Go figure?

Once we kited the lost city of Bay Ocean. Sure Netarts and the never ending peelers of Oceanside were right there, but to our knowledge, no one had ever kited the mythical Atlantic City of the West Coast.
I say GO FOR IT!

Well yeah, the waves are more fun, but sometimes its double overhead and it's just beating my arse, and sometimes it's extra cold flat water, and sometimes it really is so damn crowded that you spend more time on air traffic control than anything else, and sometimes I'm just sort of tired so I moan a little and then roll over and go to sleep. (oh wait, that last part is my wife).
Sigh. I'd rather not pioneer it. It is free of trees and such and has plenty of room to launch and land.
I'll give it a whirl at some point in July when the fog line is right at the beach and/or its dead flat.
I'll post up info if it works. Probably too skinny and gusty to be worth it, but also probably not the stupidest place I've ridden behind a kite.
That area is probably best for nude sun bathing, practicing your tee shot, and disposing of dead bodies, which is what I'm using it for now.

So where exactly is it?
IŽve been scouting the Florence area for a couple of years and thought I had ruled out anything but the surf. I might be able to comment on it if I could figure out where it is.

how my fam gets there is this - we go to that skinny little rocky beach on rhodedendrum drive, upriver from the coast guard station and right where you'd turn up to the humane society, then we cross the river on some form of personal watercraft.
From Google Earth it looks like there is just giant sand dunes and scrub grass all the way over to the S. Jetty access road. But no, there is shallow flatwater on the other side of the dunes you see from rhody - (at least there is the 3-4X I've been there, haven't tried to correlate my visits with the tide).
We started going there just to find someplace empty for the kids and dogs to play.
Any kite-ability would be bonus.
Humping in the gear from the river side would be a workout, but I suspect I'll probably stake in a rope ladder at some point to improve access.
Re:less of kiting it really is a cool spot in Flo that should be checked out on skunked days.

Pjc;
Interesting. I found it on GE and no I have not been in there. I guess it looked too narrow to be kiteable. Wind should be good as the highest things around are the dunes to E. and W. Should funnel well from the north or south.
Is the water level there dependent on the tide?
If you go north a bit you youŽll see an inlet from the estuary. The road gets close to it. I have been thinking of using it to practice kiting with a skimboard as the water is not real deep even at high tide. There are some shrubs downwind tho and it is a fairly small body of water.
Getting over from Rhody via the water is a clever idea but problematic I would think when it is windy and when the tide is ripping. It is frustrating to see the area across the estuary a quarter mile away and know it is <10 miles to drive there, each way.
By the way the road to Humane Society is the one to the dump. Coast Guard Sta. is 1/3 mile north. We have a place close to the dump road and I used to windsurf off the riprap there.

Yeah you're oriented to the spot. If you're ever skunked in flo and have a SUP handy cruising over to deadwood is a good time. The crossing is a tad sketch in high wind but on skunked days its super easy re:less of tide as there is eddys on either side.
