sad, sad day.Condolences to family and friends of the victims. One of the deceased was right next to the girl that survived by deploying her ABS. Only her head and hands were above the snow. Should be standard equipment in the backcountry. _________________ Kite Repair? AND WINGS Call me.(509) six 37-four five 29 |

Indeed, RIP people.
The interesting irony is that all these 8 people were trained in avalanche safety. Question for the rest of us to learn from now becomes, were these "safe conditions". Considering all the warnings, perhaps not?
BTW... we still don't know if the dead people had airbag devises. _________________ http://windmountainproject.blogspot.com/ |

From what I read though they may have been experienced they definitely weren't using proper backcountry etiquette. having multiple people just hanging out in the slide path. The people that were caught in the slide should have made sure they were somewhere safe before simply stopping beneath the other people in the group who were descending the slope. _________________ I heart dangling |

What my teacher told me is that you never want to think of the word safe in the BC, just dangerous. Some terrain can be less dangerous than other terrain but you are still always at risk, never safe. _________________ I heart dangling |

I would only add that you never want to think of ANYTHING in this entire world as being "safe", just dangerous.
Sitting here at my computer thinking "I am safe"...... yeah, sure. A tree could fall on my house at this very moment precisely where I am sitting at my computer right now and wipe my life away very quickly and I have nothing to say about it. Not imaginary since I'm located near ground zero of the latest gorge ice storm tree carnage. But I take that risk and understand that mother nature can take me out at any time.
Not preaching paranoia here..... just stating that risk assessment needs to be closely analyzed by every individual person no matter who you are, what gear you are using, what the peers think, or what the "experts" say is a good choice.
May we all be given the wisdom and virtue to live a full and healthy life. _________________ http://windmountainproject.blogspot.com/ |

If they were all caught in one slide then they were not very experienced OR toooo complacent. Sorry for there loss and my condolences to family and friends. These kind of accidents are going to be more frequent, unfortunately. |

definitely sad, canyons is one of the resorts i have a seasons pass too. The zone he was shredding I have riden many times last season. Its just not a good year for backcountry skiing in Utah. Danger was way high, he should not have been back there. _________________ I heart dangling |

- maybe just get a fire extinguisher and a blue tarp... _________________ Go Deep!
