Trying new things this year. I want to try surfing, without a kite, can anyone recommend a good beginner spot between Longbeach WA and Lincoln City OR? Where should I rent a board? Gonna wait for Spring to do this.

Short Sands (Oswald West State Park) is really decent, at low tide. Just start with riding the white water on a 9'6. Wider boards will be more stable, but harder to get up to speed (think about the shape of competitive row boats) so you want a longboard that isn't too wide.

Good luck! Learning to surf has been one of the highlights of my entire life.

Seaside cove is another good option. Shorter hike to the water than short sands. Try Cleanline or Seaside Surf Shop for rental gear. Both are right in Seaside.

The only reason I didn't mention the cove is because of the rocky entry/exit and the rip. But yea, the Cove is stellar for beginners once your past catching white water and can paddle a little. The rip is wicked strong and getting rushed out to sea will freak you out if you don't know how to use it properly, though once you do know how to use it, you'll love it!

Pacific City is a great spot too.
I agree with Forest; avoid cove until you are competent.
Indian Beach (Ecola St Pk) is another good beginner spot; you'll be in good company there for sure.
Just stay away from the rocks; there is a rip an whirl pool that is tough to escape.

I like Seaside because it is the closest to me.

If I spring for a lesson, 99 bucks, it should be doable, right? Smile

Totally! Surfing is hard work, you need to get strong. If you want the quickest progress, start a hard swimming workout in your local pool. It's all about time in the water, the more stamina you have, the more time you can spend.

I've had some of the best session of my life at Seaside.
It is a great spot, but can be pretty intimidating in several different ways.
As a beginner you really need to pick your days and mind the locals.

I'd try some of the more user-friendly spots first-just sayin.

Go to short sands and Cleanline in Cannon Beach is on the way. The Cove is not for people learning. . .

Surfing and Kiting compliment each other so well. Just remember, surfing is hard. Probably the hardest thing you will ever attempt, and to get good at it takes dedication and a lot of time. Don't be discouraged if you do not pick it up as quick as you imagine you are going to. And take time to learn the rules of the lineup and the unwritten codes of conduct.

All that said . It is well worth the effort, have fun and good luck!
