I dont think there is much close to Nanaimo this time of year, if you are up for a slightly longer trip Tofino can be pretty good in the winter, ~two and a half hours from Nanaimo. |

If there's a SE there's kiting at Columbia Beach and Comox. Check here for forecasts and here for location details.
Bring a warm wetsuit. |

Bigwavedave.ca is a great resource that you have found.
Recently, a found of us have found that Pipers Lagoon in Nanaimo is a great flat water spot. It is only works on a SE and at high tide. Pipers is about 5 minutes drive North of the Departure Bay ferry terminal.
Comox (Goose Spit) is a nother great flat water spot on a SE.
For waves, check out Columbia Beach in Parksville. If you have a fear of stellar sea lions you may want to avoid this place though.
If you like beer, try: Phillips Brewing, Driftwood, Lighthouse, etc...from the island. The Granville Island Winter Ale is also super tasty.
Cheers,
