Hello.....Has anybody been to Caye Caulker for kiteboarding? Any other spots in Belize or Costa Rica that I should look into, needs to be wife friendly that doesn't kite... Smile

Been there but didn't go for kiting.
CC is cool but you & your wife need to be ok with a few pushy rasta and the occasional slaggy topless hippie chick and the general non-resort caribbean vibe.
Very little wind in April from my experience.
Saw Belize's lone pro at the time out on a huge bow for a few minutes one day.
CC launch options are wade out between docks and mangroves, or hire a boat.

If you want more luxury, try the island to the north.

Not to dissuade you from going, it's probably windier in the winter, beautiful water and reefs.
And I am sure there could be great wave sailing somewhere on that incredible reef, probably hurricane season through February or so... but that is kind of a guess from me.
And doubtless if it blows, one side of the island will offer endless butter.
If you can, go inland to the mountains/rainforest also, it's beautiful and only an hour or two from the capital.
It's the only place i know you'll meet people that speak mayan and english but no spanish.

Went there 7 years ago. Kited on a 13 quite often in Feb/ Mar. Steady light wind. Launching is a challenge because of all the docks extending out into the sea 50-100 yards. Nice reef about 2 miles out for waves. Be careful of a small stingray the hangs out in the sea weedy shallows. Shuffle your feet and wear booties. Small, 4 miles long and 1/2 mile wide. Nice rasta vibe, lobster dinners on the street for $7. Not a lot of night life, One kite school and lots of snorkel/scuba tours. The world famous blue hole is near it. Enjoy!

Yes go to Caye Caulker as it is awesome! My wife and I go yearly to kite and relax. We were just there in December. The place is super chill.

If you go to kite make sure you stay on the North end of Caye Caulker. We stay a Caye Caulker Condos but there are also Caye Reef and Sea Dreams. Kiting is great late December through April when the trade winds start to pickup. The group that runs the Kite School there are great as well. If you have more questions feel free to PM me. Here's some pics from December too:

In May of 2009 I stayed at Carribean villas in San Pedro which is the town on the Island of Ambergris Caye. Did not even know it but the one and only kite shop was located at same spot. I was able to rent equipment(they had cabrihnas) and launch not two line lengths from where my wife was enjoying her drink at the beach bar and swim pool. I would recommend bringing your own kite(probably a 13m as the wind does not really get all that strong) but rent the board as it was really cheap. Most fun I had was taking the local water taxi way up island and doing a 9 mile downwinder. Had wife go with me and she brought the pump and bag back and I was able to kite all the way back and land right at my own resort.

kite shop is http://www.sailsportsbelize.com/
