thinking about renting a Larger house in or near hood river for extended family end of next august. Any suggestions of places or locations? Only I will be kiting. Are the homes in hood river near the railroad tracks? Also any suggestions for non kiting kid family activities? |

Loads of great hiking trails within a half hour on each side of h.r. Thursdays last summer when we were down there was "party in the park" (great kid activity in the evening). There may be an outdoor movie night in the park also?? Flea market Saturday mornings and plenty of shopping. |

As much as I like Hood River Proper...you may find that living on the other side of the river has advantages...like being less expensive. Bingen, White Salmon, Underwood.... Also - there is Stevenson, a bit more far out but great kiting there.
If you decide to live on the the "other side" you have to deal with the HR bridge. You get use to it. Not a big deal. The bridge toll is 75 cents each way, but I buy a breeze-by pass for a $100 and you get $20 worth of extra tickets. I go back and forth as I please. ..May thru Sept I spent under $300.
The trains are great! I like hearing them as long as it's not too close. Very charming.

" dalles" also ugly as hell and relatively nothing for non kiters to do.
Dont know about rentals but as only kiter in family we camp in HR a few times each summer and the rest of family enjoys swiming, laying in sun, picking fruit, hanging out downtown as I get my wind fix. If I were to rent a place I would definately look across the river (white salmon, lyle) perhaps find something cheaper. |

Not really sure that Washington is cheaper for a rental. Maybe for rent. But if you are looking for maximum water time, it will be way easier to keep the family entertained in hood river if they don't kite. Remember the "hidden" cost. |
