Sat May 07, 11 5:49 pm Where to rent gear in Cancun |
|
|
I will be in Cancun at the end of this month and I will not be taking my gear. I am hoping to kite on the nichupte lagoon as that is where I will be staying. Does anybody have any advice on where I can rent some gear in that area??
Thanks

I don't think there's anywhere to rent gear in Cancun, but I could be wrong. There's an outfit down in Playa del Carmen that might rent gear, just Google it. (Can't remember the name.)
I could be wrong, but I don't think the riding would be good in that lagoon. Too many big buildings... I think the wind would be crap. But I've not tried it so who knows. Try Isla Blanca north of town for clean wind and butter smooth water. Go south to Tulum or Cozumel for waves. The Ocean side of the Hotel Zone in Cancun is rideable, but very choppy. The wind gets better further from shore. (The hotels create a high pressure zone killing the wind at the beach. )
Plan on light winds if you get any at all at the end of the month, but you could always get lucky. I sure haven't used up any of the strong winds!
Have fun!

I just came back from Cancun and while didn't have a chance to kite (family first) I can attest that Nak is absolutely right.
Even though the wind was't totally crap, it was blowing straight onshore all week long, I've seen only one guy in the hotel zone (by the Ritz) attempting a ~30 min session. He was doing pretty well mowing relatively calm water, but at the end the parasails and wave runners seemed to discourage the fun.
Playa del Carmen was another story. Both to the south of the Cozumel ferry jetty (Playacar) as well as north past Constituyentes I've seen plenty of people kiting.
Haven't checked Tulum past the ruins

We just got married and spent a week on the mayan riveria.
Wind seems pretty light this time of year. I got in four days, but all on the skimboard and 12m.
Paraiso Beach directly south of Tolum was the best spot.

Dude, shay, congrats on the getting hitched and settling down a bit. Wow, how did that happen?
Guess you're stuck in TX now for good.... just make sure you keep sending those 4 and 5 star guys to Eugene!!

Thank you all for the advise. If I get out I'll share the story.

looks like it was decent today! I'm aiming for getting down to that area next march, when its hopefully a little more consistent wind. I suppose spring break time is a bit crowded down there though eh?

Of course it was! I left Yesterday morning. Story of my life...
Anytime Jan through May can be good, but it's easy to get skunked too. It's a fun place to go, but don't pick Cancun if your overriding concern is kiteboarding. Plan a vacation there to make the wife/family happy and you may be pleasantly surprised with some good kiteboarding. That's my philosophy anyway.

Exactly... we've got a voucher for a free week at one of the palace hotels. Family vaca with other potential benefits! Otherwise I'd probly hit SPI.

Just an update from Cancun. You can rent gear from Ikarus kiteboarding in Isla Blanca. Just make sure that you bring your IKO card (yeah, right) unless you want to be forced to take a lesson for $30 add'l dollars and a time limit of 2 hrs. I received very little instruction as it's formality to cover their asses.
I ended up having a nice session on a 12 meter Lithium (pretty stoked w/ the kite as I've wanted to ride an Airush for a while now) for about 3 hrs, and they didn't charge me extra. Very nice people for sure, and it's nice to be able to rent for a somewhat reasonable price and not have to shlep your gear to a spot where you could very easily get skunked all week long.
Also, the wind's been good the last couple days near the hotel zone and I've seen a bunch of kiters doing downwinders right off shore.
